Review: The Qumi Q5 Pocket Projector Is a Solid On-the-Go Media Companion
As someone with a pretty nice TV, I've never found the allure in purchasing a projector. While they're certainly smaller and sleeker than a television, and more portable, they can be pricey and produce a less than stellar image. And who really buys a projector anyways? They're for school, they're for work, they're for theaters, but they're not really for my apartment, right? At least that was my thinking before I tried the Vivitek Qumi Q5, a pocket projector with an intuitive interface that allows me to project media from my laptop, phone, and USB flash drive, in all sizes, directly on my wall. And I gotta say, the Qumi Q5 has definitely changed what I thought about portable projectors. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Getting StartedRight out of the box, the the first thing that struck me was how compact the Q5 really is. Roughly the size of an overweight phablet, the projector doesn't actually weigh that much, making it ideal for those of us that are always on the go. After being distracted by the bright red color, I quickly discarded the instructions manual and went straight to powering it on. On the right side of the Q5 you'll find the small power switch (and nothing else), which glows bright blue when it's plugged in. I pressed the power button and the Q5 made a whirring sound and several beeps before it turned on. As I was already pointing it at a blank white wall, a bright light flickered on from the lens and projected an image showing off the Q5's main interface.

Adjusting the Image SizeNow I had to figure out placement. With white walls in my office, getting a clear image wasn't going to be a big deal. I actually tested out the projection on red walls for good measure, and the image was still pretty good.I set the Q5 down about 10 feet from the wall, on a table 4 feet high, which turned into a display measuring around 50 x 30 inches on the wall. Using the focus ring on the left side of the projector, I was able to quickly get a crisp image displayed. Other projectors, such as the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema Projector, have a minimum projector distance of 34 feet, which means that I have to be at least that far from the wall in order to get a clean, focused view. With the Q5, I can be as close as 3 feet from the wall, which is perfect for smaller rooms and offices.

Connecting PeripheralsOn the back of the projector is where all the various connections are located: DC-In for power, Audio-Out for external speakers, AV-In for peripherals, and one slot each for USB, HDMI, and Universal I/O. The IR receiver is also on the back for the included remote control.

Playing & Controlling MediaUsing my USB flash drive, I was surprised at how quickly I was able to navigate through the swamp of movies, photos, and music files using the Q5's interface. With the accompanying remote, I was able to go back and forth pretty quickly through the main UI. There are even options to surf the internet and stream videos, but you'll need to plug in the included Wi-Fi dongle for that.It was when browsing through my flash drive that I stumbled upon one of the imperfections with the Q5—more specifically, the remote control. As if the flimsy look and feel of it wasn't enough, it absolutely lived up to my premature assumptions. Since the IR receiver is on the back of the projector, I was hardly able to use the remote successfully when facing the front part of the projector. Even when I was in line of the receiver, I had to position the remote a certain way and click buttons more than once to get a response.Thankfully, there is a keypad built onto the top of the Q5, which is embedded in the casing, adding to its sleek look. I used this to navigate my way through the menu, tossing the remote back into the box. After I was finished with my USB drive, I wanted to connect my iPhone so that I could stream movies to the projector. While the Q5 does support MHL, I would need an some sort of Apple-specific connection or an Apple TV for it to work, so I was screwed.Searching through the cables to see what else I could connect to the projector, it dawned on me—I could easily put my Chromecast dongle into the HDMI slot, connect my iPhone through Wi-Fi, and stream media from compatible apps.Since the Chromecast cable is a tad bit short, I used the extender that came with it so I wouldn't have to move the projector from its position. Once I got everything set up, I headed over to my iPhone, opened HBO GO (which has Chromecast compatibility), put on Season 4 of Game of Thrones, and cast the video. From my well-lit office, the image was still clear enough for pretty good viewing. Of course, dimming the lights will provide a much better image, but it's good to know that I don't need to sit in pitch darkness to watch something with the Q5.Using LocalCast (available for Android and currently in beta for iOS), I was able to project content from my phone, such as videos from my Camera Roll album and even music on my device. Perfect for a party, the album art of the song currently playing displayed on the wall, sliding up and down and left and right every few seconds. Vivitek's Qumi Q5 also comes with VGA cables that you can use to connect the projector with your computer, providing a viable option for a dual-monitor setup, except that one monitor is your wall.Sadly, I couldn't connect my Macbook Pro, because Apple's use of the Mini DisplayPort requires certain adapters that I didn't have, but I still liked the idea of having the option to connect it.
Audio QualityAs for sound, unless you're watching something alone in a quiet environment, I wouldn't suggest using the Q5's built-in speakers. Your best bet would be to connect some speakers through the Audio-Out slot on the back of the projector. Really, any speakers will fare much better than the built-in ones.
Basic Qumi Q5 SpecsBefore getting to my final thoughts on the Qumi Q5, let's quickly rundown the specs on this thing (full specs here).Brightness: Up to 500 Lumens Resolution: 1280 x 800 (native), 1600 x 1200 (max) Aspect ratio: 16:10 (4:3 and 16:9 are compatible) File compatibility: Office Viewer (Doc, XLS, PPT, PDF, TXT), Video (MPEG-4, H.264, Divx, WMV), Image (JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF), Audio (MP3, WAV) Connections: HDMI, Universal I/O (24-Pin Connector for VGA/Component Input), AV Mini-Jack, Mini-Jack Audio-Out, USB (Type A) Dimensions: 6.3" x 1.3" x 4.0" Weight: 17.3 oz. (about a pound)
Color PreferencesTo be quite frank, first impression means the world to me, so when I opened the package of the Vivitek Qumi Q5-RD in my office, my first thought was something along the lines of, "Um... yeah, I'm not really liking this glossy red color."But from there, as I began to play with it, the walls that built around my initial irrational impression (alliteration FTW) began to crumble down. Everything from its compact size to its intuitive interface all played factor into my growing appreciation. And it's available in four other colors (yellow, blue, white, and black), in case you don't like red.
PriceAt $550, the Vivitek Qumi Q5 is definitely not cheap, but compared to its competitors in that same price range, it provides more inputs and computer compatibilities than the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema Projector ($550), better maximum resolution than the LG DLP Projector ($450), and is lighter, thinner, and smaller in size than the Acer 3D Ready DLP Projector ($590).
Final ThoughtsYes, a projector is an investment, but it's worth purchasing if you enjoy the thought of having your television on the go—as long as you're not looking to replace your main big-screen TV at home. The Qumi Q5 works beautifully for outdoor viewings, meetings, kids' rooms, or pretty much anywhere you need a display without lugging around a giant TV. And if you can't afford one just yet, there's always a DIY smartphone projector.

News: 5 Things We Want to See from Nintendo's Upcoming Mario Kart Tour on the iPhone

News: 5 Things We Want to See from Nintendo's Upcoming Mario Kart Tour on the iPhone
Nintendo set the internet ablaze Wednesday night with two big announcements. First, Nintendo revealed that the Switch's paid online service will begin in September (boo), but it was the other report that really got fans excited — Mario Kart is coming to your iPhone. The news blindsided gamers, considering we had no warning this game was in the works. It does make sense — Nintendo has slowly dipped its toes into the waters of mobile gaming over the last two years. First with the near-defunct social-networking app Miitomo, then with some of its most beloved franchises. We've seen Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, and even a promising (if not overall disappointing) Mario game hit our iPhones. Now that we know a Mario Kart game is on the way, we can look at what Nintendo has done so far on mobile platforms, and instantly think of some things we'd love to see (as well as not see) from Nintendo's latest iOS effort.Don't Miss: All the Animal Crossing Pocket Camp Tips & Tricks You Need to Know
1: Good ControlsMario Kart is a racing game, so, naturally, it's important that the player feels well in-control of their kart at all times. Unfortunately, this is where I'm most concerned.Let's face it — as good as some mobile games are, it's really tough to use touch or motion controls for a game designed with physical controls in mind. In fast-paced, intense driving games, every move counts. Touch controls are usually too unreliable to give skilled players the same confidence a physical controller typically would. That's why Nintendo really needs to focus on getting these controls right.I would be happy if Nintendo would draw inspiration from something like Need For Speed: No Limits. Its touch controls are invisible and on either side of the display for comfort and maximum visibility. These controls are tight, and make you feel in control of your car. At the end of the day, that's all I want from a mobile port of Mario Kart.Don't Miss: The 9 Best Free Action Games for iPhone & Android Of course, nothing truly replaces the comfort and function of a proper physical controller. Why is why I'd like to see ...
2: Physical Controller Compatibility (iPhone Joy-Cons?)While not the most portable way to play, physical controllers and mobile games go hand-in-hand. Your iPhone is more powerful than a 3DS with a sharper display than the Switch — with physical controls, Nintendo could make a masterful Mario Kart experience. There are so many reasons to go with a physical controller for this one — drifting, jumping, tricks, items throws, these actions all require different button combinations to pull off. You don't want to clutter up the display with a bunch of touch buttons that you will inevitably mis-tap anyway (wanted to drift? Sorry, you just wasted your red shell). A physical controller would solve these problems and give Nintendo fans a full Mario Kart game on their iPhones. Now, I'm not expecting Nintendo to make their own controller — there are plenty of third-party controllers out there, some that even physically connect to your iPhone for greater portability. That being said, Nintendo already has portable controllers on the market right now, in the form of joy-cons. Would it really be so out of reach for the company to manufacture an iPhone case that the joy-cons can connect to?Come on, Nintendo — fulfill this unrealistic wish of mine.

3: A Good Selection of CoursesIf controls are the bread and butter of a Mario Kart game, courses are the meat and potatoes. What good is driving around some boring levels? We need some windy, rickety, uneven and downright diabolical courses designed specifically for iPhone, just like any other Mario Kart game would get. Imagine THIS on your morning commute. Image by Mario Kart/Nintendo Of course, it should also come with remastered versions of the best courses from previous games. A few N64 gems here, a few Double Dash tracks here, and gamers will be happy.Look, we just don't want a repeat of Super Mario Run — don't give us what feels like a real Nintendo game that we beat in 30 minutes because you skimped on the number of levels. I'm not even necessarily expecting the typical 32 courses we get in normal Mario Kart games (but I'm so expecting that, Nintendo).
4: Fair PricingIn the real world, Nintendo is known for the integrity of their games — when you drop $60 on Zelda or Mario, you can expect a full experience. While the company has started rolling out additional downloadable content, they've never gone down the route other game companies have by forcing you to purchase extra features just to feel like you've played the "real" game. But, this is mobile we're talking about. Every game needs to be free to download so you can pay for in-app purchases to make your way through. That's just the way it is.Interestingly, Nintendo has experimented with a few pricing options thus far — Mario Run offered a free trial with a $10 barrier to entry (that didn't do so well). Fire Emblem Heroes ran with a lottery system. And Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp went with a mix, by giving players a full experience for free, with optional in-app purchases to speed up certain aspects of the game. How Nintendo will approach Mario Kart is anyone's guess. I think, if the game is worth it, most traditional gamers would prefer to pay a flat price a la Mario Run. But Nintendo knows that demographic probably won't be enough to sustain revenue from another big mobile effort. If I had to guess, Nintendo will offer Mario Kart Tour either for free or for a small sum, and will present players with ample payment opportunities in-game. Karts, bikes, characters, clothes, accessories, even courses could be for sale via microtransactions. And, hey, I'm okay with that, so long as things feel fair. If I can play Mario Kart on my iPhone without having to spend more overall than I would for any other Nintendo handheld, that's alright with me.

5: Online MultiplayerMario Kart online, on your iPhone? Not even Steve Jobs could've thought that one up. Image by EverySteveJobsVideo/YouTube Online play is all but an inevitability here — Mario Kart is at its best when you play against real people, and plenty of mobile games have gotten online right. For Nintendo to ship Mario Kart Tour with no online gameplay would be a true disappointment, and I don't expect it to happen. What I do hope for, however, is for that online play to be good. I'd rather not see an intense race cut short by crashing, freezing, or any other glitches or interruptions. This game will be released in 2019 — Nintendo has plenty of time to work out the kinks. My other concern is with cost — Nintendo is rolling out a paid online service for the Switch this fall. I hope it doesn't do the same for Mario Kart Tour. Paid online is one thing for a console, and even then it feels like a ripoff. If Nintendo feels the need to include in-app purchases with Mario Kart Tour, I hope it keeps them away from the online experience. It's an exciting time to be a mobile gamer, and while it may feel far away right now, 2019 is just on the horizon. My hope is that Nintendo really thinks about the right way to bring Mario Kart to the iPhone. While maximizing revenue is important, keeping players engaged is essential. What better way is there to accomplish that than giving gamers a true version of Mario Kart for iPhone.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Gaming Phones RankedFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Tasker 101: How to Create an Exit Task

Tasker 101: How to Create an Exit Task
When you create a profile in Tasker, it will run a task as soon as all of the conditions in your profile are met. But what happens when the profile's conditions stop being met? By default, nothing will happen, but if you create an exit task, the automation tool will run that instead.Exit tasks are just like regular tasks, but they will only run when the rules you defined in your profile are no longer in effect. Think of it this way: If you tell Tasker to make your device run a task when you receive a phone call, you could also have it run an exit task when you hang up.Adding an exit task is a fairly simple process, but it's one that made Tasker finally "click" for me. So if you'd like to learn more about one of the most basic, yet most important features of Tasker, I'll show you how exit tasks work below.Don't Miss: 5 Useful Tasker Profiles to Help You Get Started with Android Automation
Step 1: Create Your Exit TaskI'm of the opinion that it's usually best to create your tasks before doing anything else in Tasker. Since tasks are what you want your phone to do, you probably have a rough outline of each step in your task already. Profiles, on the other hand, represent when (or why) you want Tasker to run your task, so they're somewhat secondary. Therefore, "task, then profile" is a logical order, particularly for beginners. The same can be said for exit tasks. Most exit tasks will essentially accomplish one thing: Putting everything back to normal. For instance, if your initial task turned Wi-Fi off when you left home, your exit task would turn it back on when you got back to the house.Aside from that, the actual process of creating an exit task is exactly the same as it was for creating your initial task. If you need to brush up on that, we've covered the entire undertaking with a separate guide, so check it out at the link below.Don't Miss: Tasker 101: How to Create a Task
Step 2: Create Your Profile & Attach Your First TaskOnce you've got your tasks in order, you'll need to create a profile that triggers them. Profiles, of course, are a set of conditions that must be met before your tasks will run. When creating a profile, you'll be prompted to associate a task with it — this is the primary task, not the exit task. In other words, the task that will run when your profile's conditions are true.So before you can add an exit task (i.e., the task that will run when your profile's conditions are false), you'll need to have a profile associated with your first task. If you need help on that front, make sure to hit up the following link.Don't Miss: Understanding the Different Types of Profiles in Tasker

Step 3: Add Your Exit TaskNow it's time to get down to business. From Tasker's Profiles tab, locate the profile you'd like to add an exit task to. If it only shows the name of the profile, tap the name to expand it and view more details. From here, long press the task portion of your profile (the text to the right). When you do that, a menu will appear — pick "Add Exit Task" here. At this point, you can choose the exit task you created in Step 1, or if you opted to skip that step, you can tap "New Task" to create the exit task at this point. But if your exit task already exists, simply select it from the popup menu. Now if you take a look at your full profile, you'll see how it all works. Beneath the title on the left, you'll see the name of your profile. If you tap this portion, it will show the conditions you set that will trigger your primary task. The primary task is shown beneath the title on the right with a green arrow next to it — this is what Tasker will do when your profile's conditions are being met. But when those conditions stop being met, your exit task will run, which is the task with a red arrow next to it. What are you using exit tasks to accomplish? Have you created any cool Tasker profiles that you'd like to share? Kssxs I find I tend to create an exit task for anything I put in my entry task, only so that I'm absolutely sure I know the state of something when I've left the area in the original conditions that would have put it into that state to begin with. Google Assistant is a handy little feature at most of the time, but it's upping the ante in honor of April Fools' Day this year. One eagle-eyed Redditor called tenbre noted that the smartphone assistant had added a new command—"April Foolproof"—which was found under the What can you do section in Assistant's options. As you can see in the above screenshots, the Google Assistant offers a few tips to help you avoid getting pranked when you say "April Foolproof." News: Chrysaor Malware Found on Android DevicesHere's What You Should Know & How to Protect Yourself

Chrysaor, a zero-day spyware believed to have been created by the Israeli "cyber war" group NSO, is an even greater threat to Android phones than it ever was to iOS.Related to the Pegasus hack that recently affected iPhones, Chrysaor is malware that baits the user into installing it. For instance, let's say you're sideloading an app, but you don't recognize the site where the APK came from, nor do you trust the developer. In this example, there's a chance that it could be a Chrysaor-infected app.Once installed, a Chrysaor app attempts to root your phone using the Framaroot method, and if that doesn't work, it attempts to use a Superuser binary built into most Android phones to achieve root. After the device has been rooted, Chrysaor has unfettered access to your entire system, so it can monitor your calls, texts, emails, location, microphone, and camera, install a key logger, and effectively spy on you with almost every Android sensor.Don't Miss: What is Root? Android Root Explained in Detail for Beginners Image via Google According to Lookout Security VP Mike Murray, "This means [Chrysaor] is easier to deploy on devices and has the ability to move laterally if the first attempt to hijack the device fails."This is much worse than what Chrysaor's malware brother, Pegasus, was able to exploit from iOS users. Pegasus specifically targeted iOS phones, jailbroke the targeted devices, and then installed spyware. If Pegasus couldn't jailbreak the targeted phone, though, then the hack failed, and all was put to bed.Chrysaor is different, and much more effective than Pegasus ever was. Google and Lookout call it "one of the most sophisticated and targeted mobile attacks we've seen in the wild."Pegasus's malware brother is also very sneaky. If Chrysaor expects it could be spotted, then the malware uninstalls itself before anyone would suspect it was ever there:[Chrysaor] will remove itself from the phone if the SIM MCC ID is invalid, an 'antidote' file exists, it has not been able to check in with the servers after 60 days, or it receives a command from the server to remove itself.
— Lookout press releaseAs of now, according to Google's press release on the Android malware, "a few dozen Android devices may have installed an application related to Pegasus, which we named Chrysaor."Don't Miss: Your Android Apps Are Secretly Getting Chatty with Your DataHowever, it doesn't look like the Israeli-made malware—rumored to charge over $1 million to infect phones—is going to be a widespread problem. It seems the malware targeted specific phones in Israel, Georgia, Mexico, Turkey, Kenya, and a few other countries outside of the Western world.Android users are more vulnerable to the spyware than iOS users, though. Chrysaor doesn't require what Lookout calls, "zero-day vulnerabilities to root the target device and install the malware," as was the case with Pegasus. This can be attributed to Android's fragmented update system, where typically only Google-made phones, like the Pixel, receive immediate updates to fix security loopholes when a zero-day vulnerability is discovered.Google recommends that Android users take caution when downloading apps from unknown sites. At the moment, Google has found no Chrysaor apps on Google Play, which is good news, although the malware is still a looming threat. As such, Google recommends taking these five steps to protect yourself:Only install apps from reputable sources, such as the Google Play Store. Secure your lock screen with a hard-to-guess password. Always keep your device up to date with the latest Android updates. Use Verify Apps to check if any of your apps are infected with malware. Practice locating your device with Android Device Manager, because, as Google notes, "you are far more likely to lose your device" than to install Chrysoar.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Phones for Privacy & SecurityFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: The Ultimate Guide to Customizing Your iPhone's Home Screen Without Jailbreaking
Your iPhone is just that — yours. Why should your home screen look like everyone else's? While iOS, and by extension, Apple, famously locks its users into its way of doing things, there's a lot more room for customization than you'd think. Before you make the switch to Android, you might want to see what you can do with the iPhone you already have. We've compiled ten ways you can change your home screen to fit your needs. Whether you want to change the order of your apps, choose a custom icon for those apps, or hide folder and app names, you can do it with these steps. But that's not all you can do on iOS — check out our full guide for all the ways you can customize your iPhone, head to toe.More Info: The Ultimate Guide to Customizing Your iPhone
1. Swap Your App IconsDon't like the way your app icons look? Change them! While iOS doesn't come close to the flexibility Android offers in this respect, those on iPhone can still change the appearance of their app icons. In fact, some apps even offer their own options for users to choose from.Unfortunately, those apps are few and far between. On the flip side, many of the apps that offer this feature do so well, implementing multiple if not a suite of icons for users to swap in and out. We just wish more apps would support this option. It's now our quest to document every app that offers this feature into an ongoing list. Make sure to let us know in the comments if you know of an app we don't!Full List: Apps that Let You Change Their Home Screen Icons

2. Create Your Own App Icons with 'Bookmarks'Just because the list of apps that natively support icon swapping is small, doesn't mean you can't change the icons for your favorite apps. In fact, with a little elbow grease, you can change almost any app's icon to anything you want. You just need something called bookmarks. At first glance, bookmarks look just like apps. But they aren't — bookmarks are icons that will launch a corresponding application. Bookmark icons are also entirely customizable, meaning you can hide the original app away in a folder and display a bookmark with whatever icon you see fit.Keep in mind, this is more-or-less a roundabout solution for customizing your app icons — once you tap a bookmark, it will take a second to redirect to the app of your choosing, bypassing the usual flow iOS is known for. Bookmarks will also only work if you know the URL scheme for the app you're trying to redirect to. If you don't know it, you won't be able to connect the app to the bookmark.Full Guide: How to Customize Your App Icons Using Bookmarks

3. Download Pre-Made App Icons Using iSkinYou don't need to make your own bookmarks in order to find them on your iPhone. Instead, browse the icons that iSkin carries on its site. You'll find a wide variety of icons for the apps you already own, in all different styles. You can make the apps on your iPhone look like anything, you just need to download the icons first. You can browse individual app icons on iSkin, but you can also download themed packs. This saves a ton of time, especially if there's a specific theme you like for all of your compatible apps anyway.Full Guide: How to Theme Your Home Screen Apps with iSkin

4. Clean Up Your Home Screen with Apple ConfiguratorRearranging your home screen by dragging your apps one-by-one gets old. Fast. Rather than subjecting yourself to this tedious torture, try using Apple Configurator 2 for Mac. The app gives you a large overview of your iPhone's home screen and allows you to quickly make adjustments with your mouse.Full Instructions: Use Apple Configurator to Organize Your Home Screen

5. Grab & Move Multiple Icons at OnceIf you don't have a Mac, or if you'd prefer to keep home screen management to your iPhone, there are tips you can use to make arranging your apps much easier. Your iPhone now allows you to grab multiple app icons at the same time, exponentially simplifying the process of making sweeping changes to your home screen layout. You can even move these groups of icons across multiple pages, picking up more as you go.Full Guide: How to Move Multiple Home Screen Apps at Once Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

6. Hide Folder Names on Your Home ScreenIf you're someone who prefers a clean home screen, folders must bug the heck out of you. The white text below each folder can be aesthetically abhorrent, especially if you have multiple folders side-by-side. Unfortunately, iOS won't let you leave the text field blank when setting up a folder, so what are you to do?Thanks to iOS 12, there's now a workaround which will ensure each and every one of your folders shows up textless on your home screen. And we mean textless. Take a look at the comparison below. You won't find a hint of text underneath any folder.Full Guide: How to Hide Folder Names on Your Home Screen for Good

7. Hide App Icon Names on Your Home ScreenYou might be asking yourself, "If I can erase folder names, can I do the same for apps?" You can! All you need to do is follow the same steps, but make a bookmark for your app first.

8. Hide Your DockOn a Mac, you can hide the dock if you want to reclaim some screen real estate. That's not the case on iOS, where the dock is permanently fixed on the home screen, even if there are no apps inside it. While you can't remove the dock, you can use special wallpapers to cover it up.Full Guide: How to Hide the Dock on Your iPhone

9. Arrange Your Icons However You WantIf you've ever used an Android device, you'll know that you can place your apps anywhere on the grid, in whatever order you like. On iOS, however, apps are arranged in a set order, top-left down. Try messing with this arrangement on your own, and you'll find nothing can be done about it.However, there is a method for creating the illusion that your apps are in a custom order. While they won't truly be, and there are limitations, you can create home screens with icons in any order you can dream of.Full Guide: How to Move App Icons Anywhere on Your Home Screen

10. Hide Apps on Your Home ScreenIf you're someone who would prefer to keep your home screen totally clean, iOS lets you do that. You can choose to have no apps on your home screen, allowing your custom wallpaper to shine through uninterrupted. This trick is for the minimalist out there.Full Guide: How to Hide Home Screen Apps to Keep Focus on Your Wallpaper Don't Miss: All the Ways You Can Customize Your Wallpaper on iOSFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Add Your Favorite Apps to the Pen Window Drawer on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 3

There wasn't really anything too special about the S Pen on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, with its limited capabilities and finicky sensitivity. Luckily, the S Pen was greatly improved on the Note 3, the biggest enhancement being Air Command, a floating menu that appears when the S Pen is removed that gives quick access to all the new features. One of the more compelling new features is Pen Window, which lets you draw a window anywhere on your screen and select an app of your choice to appear in it. Once the window is drawn, you can float it over anything you want, maximize it to full-screen mode, or even minimize it into a floating icon to be re-opened whenever needed. While the functionality is great, the choice of apps is highly restricted to just Calculator, Clock, Contacts, ChatON, Hangouts, Internet, Phone, and YouTube. If you want to use any app in Pen Window, I'll show you how in this softModder guide. Just make sure you're rooted before continuing. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
To add more apps to the Pen Window, we'll be using the root-only app PEN Window Manager, from dev Aeon Time, free on Google Play. After installing, select an app from the drawer on the right. Any app you pick will then be placed on the drawer to the left, with evidently no restriction on how many you can add. At the bottom of the app, you'll see several icons.a>z icon - Alphabetizes your app drawer. Pen Window icon - Links out to paid Pen Window app which allows you bring up Pen Window without using the stylus. Disk icon - Saves your apps. Power icon - Restarts your device, in order to enact the new app drawer. Info icon - Information about the app and developer. After organizing the app drawer and restarting your device, you'll see all the new app choices in Pen Window. I chose to add Camera, Chrome, Instagram, Spotify, and Twitter. Below, you can see the before and after. Using Instagram and Spotify worked perfectly, with Spotify being especially useful to have at the tip of my fingertips in order to change artists and songs. Instagram works great, as long as you use a vertically long window; anything smaller squashes the pictures and makes everything look shitty. Overall, PEN Window Manager is a great tool for increasing the functionality on the still limited, but expanding S Pen features on the Note 3.Note: If you want to revert back to the original 8 Pen Window applications, you'll have to manually do it through PEN Window Manager.

How To: Save Battery Life by Activating Doze Mode Faster on Android Marshmallow

How To: Save Battery Life by Activating Doze Mode Faster on Android Marshmallow
Of all the new features in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, an automatic battery-saving function called "Doze" might just be the most interesting. What it all boils down to is that if you set your phone down on a flat surface, the device uses internal sensors to detect that it's motionless and not in use, then responds by drastically scaling back battery-sucking services until the next time you pick your phone up.It's definitely a cool feature and all, and it has greatly improved standby time on every Marshmallow device we've tested so far. But it does take a while to kick in, sometimes requiring as much as an hour of laying flat and motionless before anything happens. Wouldn't it be even better if you could just have Doze take over as soon as you turned your screen off?Oasis Feng, developer of the popular battery-saving app Greenify, thought the same thing. As a result of his work, you can now make Doze kick in as soon as you turn your screen off and lay your phone down—and the best part is, you don't even have to be rooted to do it.
RequirementsDevice running Android 6.0 or higher Computer and USB data cable (non-rooted users only)

Step 1: Join the Greenify Beta ProgramThe new Greenify feature that enables Doze as soon as you turn your screen off is only available in the beta version of the app. So to begin, head to the following link from your Android device, then tap the "Become a Tester" button.Sign up for Greenify Beta Next, either tap the link on the beta signup page that says "download it on Google Play," or use this link to head to Greenify's download page. From here, either install the app if you haven't done so already, or update the app if you already have it installed to make sure you're running the latest beta version of Greenify.

Step 2: Enable 'Aggressive Doze' (Non-Rooted Users Only)If your device is rooted, you can skip this step. Otherwise, for the non-rooted users, you'll have to execute a one-time command through ADB.So make sure you've gone through the process of setting up ADB on your computer, and enabling USB debugging on your phone, then connect the two devices using a USB data cable. From here, enter the following command to make sure your phone is connected properly:adb devicesIf that returns a series of letters and numbers, you're good to go. So enter the following command to enable Greenify's new "Aggressive Doze" feature on your non-rooted device:adb -d shell pm grant com.oasisfeng.greenify android.permission.DUMP For more information and troubleshooting tips on this part of the process, see the developer's guide for enabling Aggressive Doze on non-rooted devices.

Step 3: Turn 'Aggressive Doze' On in GreenifyNow you're ready to enable the "Aggressive Doze" feature in Greenify, which will cause your phone to enter battery-saving Doze mode as soon as you turn your screen off.So to wrap things up, tap the three-dot menu button on Greenify's main menu, then select the "Experimental features" option. From here, simply tick the box next to the "Aggressive Doze" option, and you'll be all set. From now on, your phone will enter Doze mode immediately after you turn your screen off and lay your device down on a flat surface. If you'd like to verify this, head to the battery menu in Settings, and any flat lines you see on the graph will indicate the times that your phone was in Doze mode. How much battery life have you saved by enabling Greenify's Aggressive Doze mode? How To: Download Your 2018 Apple Music Listening History Just Like on Spotify

How To: Download Your 2018 Apple Music Listening History Just Like on Spotify
Around the end of each year, Spotify offers a year-in-review service so its users can see what they listened to the past year and share their listening histories in fun infographics. Apple Music does not have such a feature, unfortunately, but there is a way to curb that FOMO feeling this holiday season by downloading your listening history not just for 2018, but for the entire lifespan of your account. There's a reason this download isn't a user-facing "feature" you can access in the Apple Music app on iOS or Android. It's not even available in iTunes. The reason we have access to these records is thanks to pressure the GDPR placed on not just Apple, but all companies to be transparent about what data they have on users. Apple is taking these regulations in stride, and, while the US is not within GDPR's jurisdiction, it still allows stateside residents to view their listening history.Don't Miss: 30 Privacy & Security Settings in iOS You Should Know

Step 1: Request Your Apple Music Listening HistoryBecause this isn't a true feature, requesting your listening history is more of a process than it is with Spotify, which has a dedicated site for its service called Spotify Wrapped. To start, head over to privacy.apple.com in your mobile browser. Sign in with the Apple ID you use for Apple Music, and complete any authentication required to sign in. Once approved, tap "Request a copy of your data" under "Get a copy of your data," then tap the checkmark next to "Apple Media Services information."Unfortunately, you cannot request only your Apple Music listening history, so your download will also include information about App Store, iTunes Store, Apple Books, and Podcasts as well. You don't need to check any other information here, but if you want to, do it now — downloads can take up to seven days, so better to include these items now than waste time later. When finished, scroll to the bottom of the page, then tap "Continue." Next, choose the maximum file size you'd like for your download. If you choose a file size smaller than the contents of your raw information, Apple will divide the files up. If you don't need to worry about space and would rather everything be together, choose the largest file size possible.Once you select a maximum file size, tap "Complete request." Apple will process the request and, when approved, will let you know the download could take as long as seven days to arrive in your inbox.

Step 2: Download Your Listening HistoryOnce your downloads are ready, Apple will send you an email with all the details, including your download sizes and the expiration date of your information. You will need to use a computer for this step, as Apple does not support downloading this information on iPhone or Android.Open the email from Apple, then click "Get your data." Log in, then click the download icon next to your information on this page.

Step 3: View Your 2018 Listening HistoryOnce the files are downloaded, locate and open the ZIP file, then open "App_Store_iTunes_Store_iBooks_Store_Apple_Music." Next, open the "Apple Music Activity" folder to view an array of information about your Apple Music account. You can browse any of these files, but for this article's purposes, you'll want to open "Apple Music Play Activity."This file is the one containing your listening history. It's a spreadsheet, so you can open it in the spreadsheet app of your choice. It goes all the way back to the beginning of your account. If you opened your account in 2018, then it also doubles as a 2018 listening history record.Either way, Apple documents every track you listened to with your Apple Music account, including when you started a song, when you ended a song, song names, the device identifier for the song, your IP address, whether the song was played online or offline, and so much more. The beginning of my 2018 with Apple Music. We still wish Apple would put together a fun infographic like Spotify does to commemorate another year on the platform. However, it's a great step to see Apple being transparent about the data it keeps on us. Feel free to dig around with not only the other Apple Music data included in your download but also all the other data you can request from Apple as well.Don't Miss: How to Find Songs by Lyrics in Apple Music for iOS 12 — With or Without a SubscriptionFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Disable Password Prompts When Downloading Free Apps in the Mac App Store

How To: Disable Password Prompts When Downloading Free Apps in the Mac App Store
Whether you want to edit photos, compress files, play games, or DJ your next party, there's a free Mac app that can help you out. But things can get annoying real fast if you download a lot of free apps from the Mac App Store, since you have to type in your Apple ID password each time.iOS had a similar issue, which was nicely resolved with the release of iOS 8.3 back in April 2015. Naturally, having the option to download free apps from the App Stores without a password makes sense, since they should all be safe anyway. Furthermore, it makes sense to keep the password option for paid apps, to prevent accidental purchases. With the release of OS X El Capitan (version 10.11) last fall, the Mac App Store also included an option to download free apps password-free, but it can be tricky to find if you don't know where to look.Don't Miss: How to Return Mac Apps You Accidentally Bought

Step 1: Launch System PreferencesThe fastest way to launch System Preferences is via the menu bar. Click on the Apple icon, then select System Preferences. The fastest, most convenient way to System Preferences. Of course, if you want, you can use other methods such as Spotlight, Launchpad, your Utilities folder, or right from your Dock if you have a s.

Step 2: Select the App Store OptionFrom System Preferences, simply select the App Store option.

Step 3: Configure Your PreferencesAt the bottom, you'll see the new Password Settings that were introduced in OS X El Capitan. You must be signed in with your Apple account for these options to be available. The default behavior is to prompt for your password for all transactions. You can turn this off for free apps. Simply select Save Password for Free Downloads and you're set. You may get a popup asking for your Apple ID and password to confirm, but it should be the last time you enter a password in when it comes to free apps!

Optional: Save Password for Paid TransactionsYou also can configure to save your password for 15 minutes, after you type it into the Mac App Store, for paid apps and in-app purchases. Just select Require After 15 minutes for Purchases and In-app Purchases and you're done. Be careful with this option... with great power, comes great responsibility! I would suggest keeping the default behavior for paid apps. Prompting for your password for all paid transactions is a good way of preventing those accidental app purchases. However, if you download a lot of free apps, then choosing to disable the password prompt is quite beneficial. There is no risk associated like with the paid apps, and you have a much more refined Mac App Store experience!
