News: Android's Best Build.Prop Tweaks for Better Speed, Battery Life, & Customization

News: Android's Best Build.Prop Tweaks for Better Speed, Battery Life, & Customization
Android has a single text file named build.prop that determines tons of various system-wide settings on your device. You need root access to edit this file, since it's stored on the system partition—but the various lines of codes it contains are actually fairly easy to interpret and modify.Don't Miss: The Android Dictionary: Terms & Lingo You Should Know There are many device-specific edits you can make to your build.prop file to change the way the operating system looks and behaves, but with the sheer variety of Android devices out there, it would be impossible to list every one. Instead, I'll list all of the best universal build.prop edits I've found, which is still plenty of useful tweaks that should work on almost any Android device.

How to Edit Your build.prop FileThere are two easy ways to apply the tweaks listed below—either by opening your build.prop file with a file manager app, or by editing the file with a purpose-built app. Both methods will require that your device is rooted, though.Don't Miss: The Best File Managers for Android If you'd rather go the file browser route, navigate to the /system/ folder on the root of your device (making sure it's mounted as read/write), then long-press the build.prop file and choose "Open with..." and "Text editor." From there, either replace existing values with the ones shown here, or add any of the lines listed below to the bottom of the build.prop file. When you're done, make sure to save the file and reboot. For a dedicated app, install JRummy's Build Prop Editor from the Google Play Store. If an existing entry needs to be edited, simply tap it and use the pop-up interface to do just that. Otherwise, if you're adding a line that doesn't already exist, tap the + button at the bottom of the screen and paste in the text from this article. Then, when you're done with your edits, be sure to reboot so your changes will take effect. (1) Editing an existing line, (2) Adding a new line
Create a BackupBefore getting to altering your build.prop file, it'd be prudent to create a backup of the untouched file. Using a file manager, navigate to the file, copy it, then paste it anywhere with ".bak" at the end of the file name.If you ever need to revert back to the original file, simply remove the ".bak" and move it back to the /system/ folder.
Make Your Phone Ring as Soon as You Get a CallThis first build.prop edit will make your phone ring as soon as you get a call instead of waiting to verify the connection. For most devices, these lines won't already exist, so you'll have to add them both to the bottom of your build.prop file:ro.telephony.call_ring.delay=0 ring.delay=0
Enable Auto-Rotation on the Lock ScreenThis is generally a feature only found in tablets, but if you'd like your smartphone's lock screen to be able to rotate into portrait mode, it's an easy fix. Just add the following line to the bottom of your build.prop:lockscreen.rot_override=true
Enable Auto-Rotation on the Home ScreenThe same goes for the home screen app on phones versus tablets—rotation is disabled on most of the smaller devices. If you'd like to change that and force your launcher to use auto-rotation, add the following line to the bottom of your build.prop:log.tag.launcher_force_rotate=VERBOSE
Change DPI for Bigger or Smaller Menus & IconsThis is one of the most popular build.prop edits of all time, since it allows you to fit more content on your screen. If you'd like things to be just a little smaller, locate the following line and change the number at the end (XXX here) to a higher value:ro.sf.lcd_density=XXX You don't want to go too high with this number, as it can make your device hard to use after a certain point. Instead, I'd suggest starting off with a 10% bump and trying that out before increasing the value further as needed.
Use Google's DNS for Faster Internet ConnectionsMost Android devices will use their carrier's DNS service by default, and these can sometimes have issues resolving domain name addresses. Google has a set of free DNS servers that anyone can use, and you know they've got all of the bandwidth in the world, so they rarely fail. To force your device to use Google's more reliable DNS servers, add the following lines to the bottom of your build.prop file:net.dns1=8.8.8.8 net.dns2=8.8.4.4
Force JPEG Encoding to Be Top QualityA lot of devices are set to render media in a slightly-lowered quality to save the processor from extra burden, but most of the time, there's more than enough power to get the job done as-is. So if you think your phone can handle it and you'd rather see all JPEG images in top quality, add this line to the bottom:ro.media.enc.jpeg.quality=100
Enable or Disable on Screen Navigation KeysMost Android devices these days come with on-screen navigation keys. If you'd rather use a different solution for the back, home, and recent apps buttons, add this line to disable the on-screen buttons altogether:qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 On the other hand, if you have a device with hardware navigation buttons and you'd like to use the on-screen keys instead, add this line:qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
Disable the 'USB Debugging' NotificationIf you have USB debugging enabled so that you can send ADB commands, there's an annoying notification that pops up every time you plug your phone into your computer. If you'd like to get rid of this "USB Debugging Connected" notification, add the following line to the end of your build.prop file:persist.adb.notify=0
Enable 270-Degree Rotation in All AppsEven with auto-rotation enabled, your screen's contents will only rotate over a 180-degree span—from landscape mode in one orientation, to landscape mode flipped around the other way. But you can actually get your phone to rotate all the way around (including upside-down portrait mode) by adding the following line:windowsmgr.support_rotation_270=true
Increase the Time Between Wi-Fi Network ScansBy default, Android scans for nearby Wi-Fi networks every 15 seconds when you have Wi-Fi enabled. This helps when you're moving around between multiple access points, but for the most part, the high interval only serves to drain your battery. If you'd rather have your phone or tablet wait for 5 minutes before it looks for nearby Wi-Fi networks again, add the following line to the end of your build.prop file:wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=300 Are there any other interesting and universal build.prop tweaks that you know of? If so, tell us about them in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks' Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks' Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Siphon gas out of a 3.8 GM engine

How To: Siphon gas out of a 3.8 GM engine
In this video tutorial you will learn how to siphon gas out of a modern 3.8 GM engine. The tools you need are a screwdriver, a clear plastic pipe and a container to hold the gas. Every fuel tank has a fuel inlet and outlet point. Remove the two clamps on the pipe connected to the fuel outlet point on the tank and fix the clear plastic pipe. The other end of the plastic pipe goes in to the container. Now locate the fuel pump relay in the relay box. In this engine it is relay number 19. Remove the relay and put a jumper wire between pins 30 and 87. The fuel pump starts running and fuel will now be siphoned in to the container. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Strip the wire and make sure the wire is tied on tightly before soldering. Don't drip balls of solder. Make sure the tip is clean. Then hold it on the joint to be soldered for 4 seconds. Then poke the solder on the surface and it will melt with the heat.

News: New Google Chrome Update Lets You Scroll Through Websites Without Fear of Page Jumps
Chrome version 56 is here to help you stop accidentally clicking ads when you're scrolling or tapping a link in a webpage on your phone. That's right, annoying page jumps while a site's still loading will finally come to an end with this new update. This will be done via a new feature called scroll anchoring, which "works by locking the scroll position on an on-screen element," meaning that even when off-screen content loads, your screen will remain on the same part of the webpage. This feature is also available for desktops, but its real usefulness lies in the mobile version, where the small screen makes a page jump more pronounced. The following video gives you an example of Chrome with and without scroll anchoring.
This feature was previously available as a hidden setting that needed to be enabled manually, but with this new update, scroll anchoring is finally on by default.Google reports that this helps prevent an average of 3 page jumps per page view. So if you'd like to get the new feature, just make sure to update your Google Chrome app for Android or iOS.Don't Miss: Get the Chrome Experience on Android Without Google Tracking YouFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

News: PSAiOS 10 Beta Might Eat Up All Your Data

I was one of the first to install the iOS 10 developer beta, and I remember thinking that everything was working insanely well compared to the first iOS 9 developer beta—but then I got a warning that I used 90% of my data 11 days into my following cycle—one day before I updated to beta 2.Don't Miss:Get iOS 10 Beta on Your iPhone Right NowNow, I only have a 2 GB plan, but my average monthly data use over the last 12 months has been under 1 GB, so I never even get close to going over. Turns out, there were two culprits in iOS 10 that made me consume more data. And no, I don't play Pokémon GO.Firstly, content blockers weren't working, so I would see ads on every webpage I visited in Safari. No big deal, as I was half-expecting this, and don't expect it to be resolved until a full public release. Plus, it's not a huge bump in data usage.Secondly, and more importantly, app updates were installing on cellular data—even though I had "Use Cellular Data" toggled off in the iTunes & App Stores settings. Turning off cellular data temporarily would prevent them from downloading all the way, and I eventually turned off cellular data for most of my apps individually, including the App Store, so I could still use Maps and a few other essentials.Since then, I've been pretty thrifty with data with 0.05 GB left and a few days left in my cycle. But after installing iOS 10 beta 3—and having "Use Cellular Data" (for App Store) and "Wi-Fi Assist" both toggled off—apps tried installing on cellular data again even though I had data toggled off for EVERY SINGLE APP. Maybe app updates are bundled in "System Services," but that doesn't seem right to me. (1) 90% used a day before beta 2. (2) Updates trying to install on data, after beta 3. So if you've been experiencing excessive cellular data on iOS 10 like me and some other unlucky users, and have a low data plan, pay attention to how many ads are loading in Safari, and disable the following settings:Cellular data for any apps you won't need it for, including the App Store. "Use Cellular Data" in the iTunes & App Store, as well as the iCloud Drive app. "Wi-Fi Assist" in the Cellular settings. However, as of right now, turning off cellular data completely seems to be the only way to prevent app updates from installing, as well as preventing the miscellaneous "System Services" from eating away at your data—not exactly ideal for a smartphone these days. I would only toggle cellular data off completely when you don't need it, or when apps try to update themselves—otherwise, it's best left on.Now, don't let this scare you away from installing the iOS 10 public beta. In fact, I encourage you to do so. Despite some cellular data bugs, there are some really cool features that you'll want to have sooner rather than later, like better widgets, being able to remove stock apps from your home screen, a parked car locator, and more.Don't Miss: The Coolest New iOS 10 Features You Didn't Know AboutAll of these data issues should be resolved when the final iOS 10 public version is released this coming September, so it's just a few more months now.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

But if you're running Android, there's no need to be jealous — using the new Quick Settings editor introduced with Android 7.0 Nougat, you can add a tile that behaves exactly like the one in iOS 12 and lets you scan QR codes in a single tap.Don't Miss: All the Best New Features Coming in Apple's iOS 12 Update
RequirementAndroid 7.0 or higher

Step 1: Install a QR Code Reader AppFirst, you'll need a QR code reader app. Any such app will do, but we recommend Norton Snap since it's reputable and there are a lot of questionable permission-hungry QR apps on the Play Store.Install Norton Snap for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Install Custom Quick SettingsNext, it's time to install an app that will let you create your own custom Quick Settings tiles. There are a few different apps that do this, but the best free option is called Custom Quick Settings by developer Mighty Quinn Apps.Install Custom Quick Settings for free from the Google Play Store

Step 3: Grant PermissionsAfter installing Custom Quick Settings, go ahead and open the app up. You'll be greeted by a feature tour — tap the forward arrow to skip through this, then press "Grant Permissions" when prompted. The first permission it asks for will take you to a system settings menu. Enable the switch next to "Allow modifying system settings," then press your back button. Tap "Grant Permissions" on the next prompt, then hit "Allow" on the two popups that emerge next. From there, the app will offer to enable more options with root or ADB, but you don't need these for this purpose, so tap "Close" or "Never show again."

Step 4: Add a Quick Settings TileNow, from the main menu in Custom Quick Settings, tap the blue + button in the bottom-right corner. You'll be taken to a screen that demonstrates how to add a custom Quick Settings tile — leave this screen open, then fully expand your Quick Settings menu by swiping down twice from the top of your screen. Next, tap the pencil-shaped edit button in your Quick Settings menu (with some OEM skins, this will be a three-dot menu button or a button that says "Edit"). From there, scroll towards the bottom of the list and find the "Custom Tile 0" toggle. Long-press it, then drag it up to the top of the list to place it among your active tiles. For more information on this process, check out the following guide:More Info: How to Add Your Own Custom Quick Settings Tiles on Android 7.0+

Step 5: Customize Your New TileWith your new tile added to the Quick Settings panel, it's time to choose what that tile actually does. Back in the Custom Quick Settings app, you should be greeted by a menu that looks like the first screenshot below. If not, tap the "Custom Tile 0" entry from the app's main menu.Next, choose "Launch App" from the list, then scroll down and select "Norton Snap." If you're using another QR reader app, you can select it from this menu instead. After selecting the app, you'll be taken back to the tile editing menu. From here, tap the "Settings" tab on the bottom of the screen (the one with the wrench icon). Tap the black dot to change the tile's icon, then choose "Built In" on the prompt. From there, search for "qr," then pick one of the available options. Finally, you can rename the tile by tapping the "Title" field. When you're done customizing your new tile, tap your back button twice to head back to the main menu in Custom Quick Settings. At this point, you're all set to try out the new feature.

Step 6: Scan QR Codes in 1 TapFrom now on, whenever you need to quickly scan a QR code, just open your Quick Settings menu and tap the tile you just created. The Norton Snap app will automatically open and begin scanning for QR codes immediately. When it finds the attached metadata, it will deal with it accordingly (i.e., open a link in your browser). It may have taken a little work, but now you have a perfect replica of iOS 12's new QR scanning feature. How are you liking this little tweak? How To: 18 Tips for iOS 11's New Screenshot Tool on Your iPhone

How To: 18 Tips for iOS 11's New Screenshot Tool on Your iPhone
The first thing you'll probably notice after updating your iPhone to iOS 11 is what happens after you take a screenshot. Instead of just a flash of light and maybe a noise, you'll also be greeted with a thumbnail image of what you just captured — and that tiny thumbnail image holds a lot of superpowers. It's true. No more will you have to go to Photos to add markup to your screenshots. This little preview image that floats on your screen for a brief amount of time holds the key that lets you edit and share your screenshots right away. It's faster, more intuitive, and easier than ever to doodle up your screenshots.Don't Miss: How to Turn Your iPhone's Auto-Brightness Off in iOS 11

Tip 1: Take Your ScreenshotTaking a screenshot hasn't changed at all in iOS 11. It still works the exact same way as it did years and years ago. Just hold down on the Sleep/Wake (aka power) button and the Home button at the same time on your iPhone. The only difference now is that when you take that screenshot, you'll see a thumbnail in the bottom left of your screen that sticks around for about five seconds and disappears if you don't interact with it. If you want to get rid of it even quicker, just slide it over to the left.

Tip 2: Share Your Screenshot (The Fast Way)If you just want to take a screenshot to share with somebody real quick or to transfer over to your computer, you don't have to open it up in Photos to do so. Just press and hold on the thumbnail icon to bring up the share sheet. You can instantly transfer it with AirDrop to another Apple device, text it, email it, add it to Notes, save it to the new Files app, and all the other stuff you'd expect in the share sheet.

Tip 3: Mark Up Your ScreenshotIf you actually want to edit the screenshot, tap on the thumbnail and the screenshot will open up in the Markup window. You can quickly jot something down with the default black pen or you go more in-depth with your edits. This is very similar to the Markup tool in Photos.

Tip 4: Select Draw ToolsOn the edit screen, you can select from a pen (the default), highlighter, or pencil in the formatting toolbar at the bottom. After you select one, you can tap on the color dot to change the color from black to white, blue, green, yellow, or red.If you've marked up images before in Photos, you'll notice that this Markup screen doesn't have any options for sizes like it did in iOS 10, and that's because it's based on gestures instead. Move slow and precise with your finger and you'll get thin lines, go wild and crazy all over the screen and you'll get thick lines.
Tip 5: Fix Quick MistakesIf you make a mistake, you can use the eraser to make fine-tuned adjustments, just like you can in the Markup screen in Photos.

Tip 6: Move Things AroundIf you just drew your doodle in the wrong spot, you can use the dotted lasso tool to select the doodle in the image. After that, you can tap and move the specific doodle to where you want on the screen. Previously, you would just press and hold on a drawing to move it around in the Photos app, which I think was actually easier.

Tip 7: Undo & RedoYou can use the back arrow in the top right to undo your last edit or to keep going back as far as you need to. Conversely, the forward arrow will redo any action or actions. You can also press and hold on the buttons to bring up more undo or redo options. This is very similar to the Markup tool in Photos, with the addition of the redo button.

Tip 8: Crop & ZoomTo crop the image, just move the blue border around the screenshot inward to your liking, similar to most other cropping tools on your iPhone. If you crop it too much, you can always move the borders back out. Nothing is permanent. You can also zoom in on the image with a pinch-out gesture, or zoom out with a pinch-in gesture. (It's more natural than it sounds.)

Tip 9: Add TextAdding text is pretty much exactly the same as how it was in the Markup tool in Photos in iOS 10. Just tap on the "Aa" icon, tap on the text box, then "Edit," and start typing. You can choose different colors, different fonts, make it smaller or bigger, and/or change the text's justification or make it monospaced.

Tip 10: Add Your SignatureIf you want to create a signature that you use all of the time, or any random word or phrase that you use a lot, just tap on the + icon and select "Signature." If you don't have any current signatures, you'll be prompted to create one. If you do, you can simply select which one you want to add.

Tip 11: Magnify Content on the ScreenThe handy magnifying glass tool is also in the + menu. Just select "Magnifier" from the list, then drag the magnified circle to where you need it, use the blue dot to change the size of the circle, then the green dot to change the magnification.

Tip 12: Add Customizable ShapesAlso available in the + menu list are shapes. There's squares, circles, speech bubbles, and arrows, all of which can be customized to your liking. You can make the shapes bigger or smaller, make the outlines thinner or thicker, fill them in with a solid color, and squeeze or stretch them. For arrows, you can also choose different types of lines.

Tip 13: Share Your Screenshot (The Slow Way)Once your screenshot is marked up how you want it, you can now share it. Just tap the share sheet icon in the bottom left to see all of your options.
Tip 14: Save or Delete Your ScreenshotIf you didn't tap on the thumbnail to edit the screenshot, and it either went away by itself or you swiped it away, the screenshot was automatically saved to your Screenshots album in Photos, so you don't have to worry about it. If you did edit it, you need to select "Done" to either save or delete your work of art.

Tip 15: Take & Edit Multiple ScreenshotsThe best thing about this new screenshot tool is that you can take multiple screenshots in a row and edit them all at the same time. The thumbnail images are not visible in subsequent screenshots, so you don't have to worry about that either. Once you've taken enough screenshots, tap on the thumbnail group to open up the Markup screen and edit them all in the same sitting. Just swipe left and right to view the different screenshots.

Tip 16: Drag & Drop onto Other ScreenshotsIf you have multiple screenshots and want to duplicate shapes across screenshots or just move shapes around from screenshot to screenshots, it's totally possible. You can't drag and drop everything, like text, but drawings are definitely fair game. When you drag something off its current image (make sure to press down hard to select it), it'll show up as a box, then you can drag that and drop it where you want on another image.

Tip 17: Delete a Screenshot Right AwayIf you accidentally took a screenshot and don't want it showing up in your camera roll, there's no "X" to tap on the thumbnail preview to remove it instantly, and if you let it go it will automatically be saved. So, in order to delete something right away, tap on the thumbnail, hit "Done" real quick, then choose "Delete Screenshot."
Tip 18: Turn on DND & Don't Let You Screen Turn OffIf you're right in the middle of editing and someone calls you or your screen automatically turns off, all of your edits will be saved to the Screenshots album in Photos. However, you won't be able to undo any of your drawings or drag and drop them anywhere. So, to avoid this, make sure your screen stays awake and turn on Do Not Disturb mode so calls don't come in.
The One Thing Missing ...As great as this new tool is, there's one thing it needs — a way to disable it. Some of you might not actually want that screenshot thumbnail appearing every time because you don't want to edit or share it right away. In that case, the only thing you can do right now is swipe it away. Maybe one day Apple will add a toggle for this feature in the Settings app, but until then, there's not much you can do.Don't Miss: 90+ Cool New iOS 11 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

News: 15 Great Reasons to Root Your Phone

News: 15 Great Reasons to Root Your Phone
Okay, so you finally got around to rooting your Android device—now what? Well, to get the most out of your Superuser status, you'll need to find some good root apps, which will allow you to easily add features, reduce battery drain, remove ads, and much more.Don't Miss: Android Root Explained in Detail for Beginners For years now, we've been rooting every Android device we get our hands on here at Gadget Hacks, so we've definitely dealt with our fair share of root apps. The following list highlights all of the best root apps we've found over this time, many of which we would even call indispensable.

#1 - Titanium BackupTitanium Backup has always been the most highly-recommended root app for a good reason—it allows you to make complete backups of all your apps and their data, and lets you uninstall any unwanted bloatware apps. A new app-backup system in Android 6.0 has reduced the need for Titanium Backup ever so slightly—but until that system matures quite a bit, Titanium Backup is still an indispensable app.Install Titanium Backup for free from the Google Play Store

#2 - AdAwayAds suck, plain and simple. Luckily, though, an open-source root app called AdAway can completely banish ads from every app and website on your device in one simple tap. It's the most effective ad-blocking app out there, but you'll need to make sure you have "Unknown sources" enabled so that you can sideload the app from F-Droid.Install AdAway for free from the F-Droid Repository

#3 - Online Nandroid BackupIf you have a custom recovery installed, you know how important it is to create NANDroid backups periodically. But it's always a pain to boot into recovery mode, then wait 10 minutes while the backup runs, which is what makes Online Nandroid Backup such an awesome app. Instead of bothering with recovery, you can create NANDroid backups from within Android, which saves you time and makes it easier to always have a fallback plan.Install Online Nandroid Backup for free from the Google Play Store See our full set-up guide for Online Nandroid Backup

#4 - CF.LumenOur circadian rhythms gather cues from daylight to know when it's time to sleep and time to wake up, but our electronic devices emit a bluish light, which can easily disrupt this cycle by simulating daylight. To reverse these negative effects, try installing CF.lumen, which automatically cancels out the blue light being emitted by your device as the sun sets, much like f.lux for desktop computers.Install CF.lumen for free from the Google Play Store See our full set-up guide for CF.lumen

#5 - Wakelock DetectorOne of the main causes of battery drain on Android is the dreaded wakelock, which is a service apps use to prevent your device from sleeping so that they can sync data in the background and post notifications. Some apps are worse than others when it comes to wakelocks, but Wakelock Detector will help you get to the bottom of the issue by identifying the apps that hold the most wakelocks on your system.Install Wakelock Detector for free from the Google Play Store See our full set-up guide for Wakelock Detector

#6 - Emoji SwitcherA lot of people aren't fond of Samsung's emojis, and there are others who prefer the emojis from iOS. Emoji Switcher puts the choice in your hands and allows you to switch between several different popular emoji sets. This will definitely come in handy if you've been getting texts with missing characters from your friends who use iPhones, since it even lets you update to the Unicode 8.0 emojis.Install Emoji Switcher for free from the Google Play Store See our full set-up guide for Emoji Switcher

#7 - SD MaidSD Maid is a great tool for keeping the storage partition on your device nice and tidy. It can automatically find and delete leftover data from uninstalled apps, remove unused system files, and even tidy up device databases. On top of that, an "AppControl" feature lets you prevent apps from starting on boot, so there's plenty of battery-saving potential here as well.Install SD Maid for free from the Google Play Store See our full set-up guide for SD Maid

#8 - FlashFireOne of the most powerful apps in this list is FlashFire from developer Chainfire. You can use FlashFire in place of a custom recovery to flash ZIPs directly from within Android, or you can even use it to install firmware updates on a rooted device without using a computer, so even though it's still in its beta testing phases, it's already becoming a very powerful tool.Opt into the FlashFire beta program to install the app See our full set-up guide for FlashFire

#9 - GreenifyIf it's battery saving you're after, Greenify can make a huge difference by hibernating apps that you're not using so that they don't waste system resources in the background. Some Greenify features can be activated without root, but having root access makes things a lot easier. For instance, a new "Aggressive Doze" feature for Marshmallow devices can be enabled using root by pressing a button instead of running complicated ADB commands, and a similar "Shallow Hibernation" feature makes hibernated apps open quicker on rooted devices.Install Greenify for free from the Google Play Store See our full set-up guide for Greenify's Aggressive Doze feature

#10 - TexdroiderAndroid displays are calibrated to show icons and text at a certain scale, but since you own a rooted device, you don't have to accept this as an invariable fact. Texdroider allows you to easily change your device's DPI in a few simple steps, which in turn will cause visual assets to show up as larger or smaller throughout the operating system.Install Texdroider for free from the Google Play Store (1) Changing DPI with Texdroider, (2) Before, (3) After

#11 - Social Contact Photo SyncIt's always a struggle to keep up with your contacts, especially when it comes to making sure everybody has a nice contact photo attached. An app called Social Contact Photo Sync can help with this issue, as it automatically downloads profile photos from many popular social media sites, then attaches them to the associated contact card on your device.Install Social Contact Photo Sync for free from the Google Play Store

#12 - RecentlyWhen Android 5.0 rolled out, many users were dumbfounded by the decision to keep individual Google searches mixed in with Android's task switcher interface and preserve all app entries even through a reboot. This obviously made things a lot more cluttered, but an app called Recently can clear things up a bit by allowing you to pick and choose exactly what entries are left in this list—and it even lets you add a "Clear All" button if you'd like.Install Recently for free from the Google Play Store See our full set-up guide for Recently

#13 - Music MateIf you've uploaded your MP3 library to Google Play Music, you can stream your favorite songs at any time. But even if you use the "Pin to Device" feature, these cloud-based songs can't be played in any other music app. Music Mate puts an end to this issue by allowing you to sync your own music to be saved to your device and played with any app. The free version only allows you to sync up to 50 songs, but this limitation can be removed with a $3.99 in-app purchase.Install Music Mate for free from the Google Play Store (1) Selecting music to sync, (2) Same music available locally in Shuttle Music Player

#14 - AFWall+Android 6.0 has a brand new permissions system, but this still doesn't allow you to revoke an app's permission to access the internet. AFWall+, on the other hand, lets you pick and choose the apps that can access Wi-Fi, your local network, or mobile data. You can even set up multiple profiles to easily switch back and forth between allowing and denying internet access, so it's entirely your call.Install AFWall+ for free from the Google Play Store

#15 - UndeleterIf you ever end up accidentally deleting a priceless photo or an important file, all is not lost. An app called Undeleter can actually recover deleted files in most cases, but your chances are a lot higher if the file was recently deleted and you haven't rebooted since. The process is quite simple, but we've covered some tips that you should keep in mind, so check those out at the link below.Install Undeleter for free from the Google Play Store See our full set-up guide for Undeleter Do you have any awesome root apps you would like to recommend? News: Review of Apple's New Lightning to Micro USB Adapter for iPhone 5, iPad Mini, 4th Gen iPad, 5th Gen iPod Touch & Nano
Thanks for stopping by to view my Apple Lightning to Micro USB adapter review. The unit comes in a low profile cardboard box and some misc documentation -none of which appear to include any instructions but I think I can figure out how to use it. The adapter is small and well constructed as you would expect from an Apple product and for almost $24 including tax. The plastic encasing the connector is a little larger than with Apple's Lightning cable.I bought the adapter to add portability to my iPhone5 lifestyle. Portable batteries are charged using a micro USB connector so my micro USB cable could do double duty to charge the portable battery and with the adapter the iPhone. In my example I will used a retractable USB cable (reach for cable) making my charging kit more portable. Compare that to the more rigid Apple Lightning cable which is harder to fit in my pouch than the retractable cable. The Apple Lightning to Micro USB adapter worked fine with both charging and syncing. I'm very happy with the Lightning adapter though my only issue with the Lightning adapter is that it is so small I'm afraid I might lose it. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

How To: Unlock Your Nexus 7 with These Free Mini Lock Screen Games
Sometimes it's the little things that make our days better, like finding a dollar in our recently washed jeans or a box of donuts in the lunch room. But your Nexus 7 tablet's lock screen isn't typically one of those things—it's just a lock screen after all.Unless you add custom widgets or make it adapt to your location, there isn't a whole lot to it, and even with these improvements, it's still not "fun" to unlock your device.Today, I'll be showing you a replacement lock screen that will definitely add some joy to your day, even if it's just for a second. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Joy Locker on Your Nexus 7Joy Locker, from Global Animation Dev, is a fun lock screen app that lets us quickly apply games that unlock our device upon completion. Download and install Joy Locker from Google Play to start adding some fun to your lock screen.

Step 2: Add Game Themes to Joy LockerOpen up Joy Locker and choose a lock screen you think you'll like. The app comes with one pre-installed theme, but it categorizes the large number of add-ons available under the Top, New, and Topic tabs. Tapping on one will take you to its Google Play Store page where you can download/install it. You can check out all of the themes made by Global Animation Dev over on their Google Play page. Make sure to read your chosen theme's description on Google Play beforehand, that way you know how to unlock your device with that specific game. Some are easier than others to figure out.

Step 3: Apply Themes to Your Lock ScreenAfter installing your themes, go to the Installed tab and tap on one to apply it as your new Nexus 7 lock screen.

Step 4: Add Security to Your New Lock ScreenIf you want the extra security, go into the settings and set up a passcode or pattern to input after completing the quick game.Other than password protection, a preference you probably want to enable is the Emergency Unlock feature. This can come in handy in the event that you have no clue on how to complete the mini game. Some games require cutting a pirates hot air balloon strings, pulling a secret key, and giving a cat fishbones, just to name a few. Above (from left to right): Bad Pirate Screen lock, What is this Screen lock, Greedy Cat Screen-locker

Step 5: Use Joy Locker's Quick Access FeaturesWhile the mini games are cute and fun, Joy Locker has some serious functionality built-in as well. Pull the lock screen window from any side to expose a window with quick access to Google Search, basic toggles for things like Wi-Fi and brightness, as well as shortcuts to your favorite apps. Tap on the "plus" button to add or remove quick access apps. You can also browse categories like News, Weather, Sports, and YouTube from the top of the access panel.

How To: Ditch the Dongle & Make Any Wired Headphones Work with Bluetooth

How To: Ditch the Dongle & Make Any Wired Headphones Work with Bluetooth

With the rapid demise of the 3.5 mm headphone jack, Bluetooth is fast becoming our best option for universal audio. The problem is, with over a decade of it being a standard component, many of us still own a reliable pair of wired headphones that we don't want to gather dust. Well with one tool, you can have your cake and eat it, too. While dongles are always an option, the problem is that they stick out of your phone, making them pretty easy to lose. And because they use the data port (Lightning port for iOS and USB-C or Micro USB for Android), you are unable to charge the device or attach any other accessory which might also use this port. Instead, a better solution is a Bluetooth receiver. With a Bluetooth receiver, you plug your wired headphones to the receiver which then connects to your phone wirelessly. Music is then transmitted from your phone to your wired headphones via the receiver. Your data port remains free for other uses, and you get to still enjoy those wired headphones even without a headphone jack. Image by Apple Informed/YouTube One of the biggest problems audiophiles have with Bluetooth is the audio quality. Bluetooth just doesn't match the sound quality of a direct connection via a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Companies such as Qualcomm have worked to improve this by introducing new wireless audio codecs which help to bridge the gap a bit, including aptX and aptX HD. The problem is many Bluetooth receivers don't support them.Enter the FiiO BTR3. Not only does this small adapter provide Bluetooth to your headphones, but it also amplifies the sound and improves the wireless performance. It is the first Bluetooth amplifier to support all the wireless sound formats including AAC, SBC, aptX, aptX Low Latency, aptX HD, LDAC, and LHDC, so the sound quality will be as good as it gets with Bluetooth.FiiO even includes an indicator light (which is the FiiO text on the device) that flashes a different color depending on which wireless audio codecs are currently being used. Managing this device is the Qualcomm CR8675 Bluetooth chip, which allows it to provide such high-quality Bluetooth audio while minimizing power consumption (its battery is rated for 11 hours of continuous usage). Image by FiiO Official/YouTube FiiO BTR3 includes a clip so you can easily attach the receiver to your pants or shirt. There is also a built-in mic which supports Qualcomm cVc noise cancellation technology, so you can make and receive calls free of background noise.Additionally, this amplifier can also be used as a USB DAC for improved performance for wired headphones. As long as your smartphone supports USB OTG, you connect the amplifier directly to your phone using the included wire and use the included DAC for improved performance. This is a superior DAC to default option for most smartphones, making it a must-have for audiophiles. Image by FiiO Official/YouTube In this post-headphone jack world, the FiiO BTR3 is one of the best options out there for those who enjoy music. If you want to use your wired headphone still, this is your best option for minimizing the compromise in audio quality.Buy the FiiO BTR3 from Amazon ($69.99)Follow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Turn Your Own Photos into 3D Wallpapers for Android
Google's new camera app has a highly innovative and unique feature dubbed Lens Blur, and the most interesting thing about it is not necessarily what it does, so much as how it does it.You take a picture, then slide your phone in an upward motion, and the app creates 2 new pieces of information. One is the initial photo, which was taken when you first pressed the shutter button. The second came when you were sweeping your phone in that upward motion—it created a 3D map of every pixel in that initial photo.By default, the camera app uses this 3D map as a reference point in adding a blur effect to objects that don't fall on a user-specified plane.Using this same 3D map, third-party developers have begun to apply the data in fun new ways. UK dev team Opotech has created a new live wallpaper that applies a three-dimensional parallax effect to your photo, and uses your device's sensors to "change" the vantage point as you move. What's more, this softMod doesn't require root and can be done on a fully stock Nexus 5 or other Nexus device, along with pretty much any other Android phone or tablet. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Depth Photo 3D Live WallpaperGo ahead and install the Depth Photo 3D Live Wallpaper from the Google Play Store to get started.

Step 2: Take a Lens Blur PhotoThe live wallpaper app is capable of creating a 3D effect on any Lens Blur photo you take. Just open the stock Camera app on your Nexus 5 and swipe inward from the left edge of the screen. This will bring up a menu of capture modes, where you should choose Lens Blur. Next, tap the Shutter button, and an animation will prompt you to slide your device in an upward motion. I've found that simply backing away or leaning in towards the subject works as well. If successful, you should see a check mark. The photo can take a bit to process, so check your notification bar for the progress on that before moving on.

Step 3: Configure the WallpaperNow that you've taken your Lens Blur photo, you're ready to set up the wallpaper. Open Depth Photo 3D from your app drawer to get started. From the main screen, tap the Settings button at the bottom. Next, hit Choose Lens Blur photo to add your picture. From the next screen, tap the photo you just took. The list is ordered by most recent, so it should be right up top. As soon as you do that, the app will process the image. Next, tap your phone's back button once, and you should see a preview of your new wallpaper. Hit Set Wallpaper to make it your new home screen background. The free version of Depth Photo 3D uses your phone's accelerometer to alter the perspective on the photo you took. An in-app purchase of $1.42 allows you to customize the effect sensitivity and use other sensors, such as the gyroscope. Either way, your perspective on the background photo changes as you move your device.

Step 4: (Optional) Use a Lens Blur Photo from Google+This step is purely optional, as you can easily create your own. But the developer has created a Google+ community where users can share their Lens Blur photos for others to use as a 3D wallpaper. From the app's settings menu, hit Get more images. This will take you to the Google+ community where you can tap any image you like. After tapping an image, just hit the Share button at the bottom and select Depth Photo from the list. Afterwards, you can just back out and hit Set Wallpaper again. Overall, it's a really cool effect that is easy to apply and unique to you. Can we see some of your lens blur photos? Share one on Google+ and post a link to it in the comments section below.
