How To: Take Notes in a Terminal Interface with This Linux-Style App

How To: Take Notes in a Terminal Interface with This Linux-Style App
Deep down inside, Android is really just a fork of Linux, the popular open source desktop OS. You can see traces of its roots everywhere, and this lineage still holds a certain appeal with many Android fans. If you're in that boat, you'll love the newest notes app we just found.Developer Archtects created the perfect note-taking app for fans of desktop Linux. Like Android's parent OS, everything can be accomplished through a command line, and it's even got a Terminal-like interface. Sure, it's just a notes app, but it puts a fun spin on creating reminders and to-do lists, plus any point-and-click plebs looking over your shoulder won't have any idea what you're doing!

Step 1: Install Terminal Note TakingTo get started, head to the Play Store and install the Terminal-style notes app, which is called Terminal Note Taking. If you'd like, you can grab the pro version to get custom themes for $0.99.Install Terminal Note Taking for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Take NotesWhen you first launch the app, you'll be greeted by the good ol' command prompt. There are two ways you can create a new note from here. The first option simply creates a quick note file without a specific name. To use this method, simply type the letter q into the prompt and press enter on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can create a new note with a name. This is a better option if you plan to use this app often, as it makes organization a lot easier. To try this method, enter the following command, but replace (note name) with the name you'd like to give your note:new -(note name) From there, the app acts as a simple notepad. Just type in anything you'd like to remember later, and know that you can press enter on your keyboard if you'd like to add a new line to the note. When you're done jotting down your note, either enter s to save it and head back to the main menu, or enter se to save the note and exit the app.

Step 3: Edit Previous NotesIf you'd like to add a few more items to one of your notes, start by entering ls into the prompt. This will display a list of all the notes you've saved with Terminal Note Taking, just like it does with the regular Linux Terminal prompt. Now that you can clearly see the name of all your notes, enter the following command, but replace (note name) with the actual name of your note. From there, you can add new items, and again, you can save using the s or se command.edit -(note name)

Step 4: Quickly View Previous NotesSometimes, you may not want to edit your notes — perhaps you just want to view the items you've added to one. If that's the case, much like using the cat command on Linux, you can "concatenate" the elements of the note.So to quickly read a note, enter the following command, but replace (note name) with the name of the actual note:cat -(note name)

Step 5: Share Notes as FilesTerminal Note Taking saves all of your notes as simple TXT files, which makes them incredibly easy to share. Using your favorite file browser, navigate to the N073_5 folder on your SD card or internal storage partition, then you'll see your notes listed plain as day. From there, you can use Android's share menu to send the files to a friend or save them on another device.Don't Miss: How to Edit Android's Share Menu

Step 6: Delete Old NotesIf you want to delete a note, you've got two options. First, you could use a file browser app to delete the actual file (as you can see in Step 5 above), but that's no fun. To do it with a terminal command instead, just enter the following line, but replace (note name) with the actual name of the note.rm -(note name)Alternatively, you can enter rm all to remove all saved notes from your device's internal storage in one shot.

Step 7: When in Doubt, Ask for HelpEven though we've covered most of the app's primary functions in this guide, you may need an oddball command here or there. If that's the case, just enter help into the prompt, then you'll see a list of all the commands you can enter in Terminal Note Taking. Personally, I love fun little apps like these — especially the ones that highlight Android's heritage. What are your thoughts on Terminal-style apps? Let us know in the comment section below.Don't Miss: This Linux-Style Launcher Turns Your Home Screen Into a Command PromptFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Turn Your Live Photo into a Facebook Profile Video

How To: Turn Your Live Photo into a Facebook Profile Video
Changing your Facebook profile picture to a video is a great way to stand out from the crowd. A regular video file isn't the only option, though — if you're an iPhone user, you can also upload a Live Photo as your new profile picture to add more pizzazz to your Facebook page.Unfortunately, you can't just snap a Live Photo and post it as your new FB pic right away — you first need to convert your Live Photo into a Facebook-compatible file. So below, I'll show you three different methods to turn your Live Photo into a video, then once you've got that sorted out, I'll show you how to upload the converted video to use it as an animated Facebook profile pic.Don't Miss: How to Set Video Profile Picctures on Facebook Using Any PhoneBefore going over the different ways to convert a Live Photo into a Facebook-friendly profile video, you might want to edit your Live Photo first, if necessary. There's plenty of features you can use to accentuate your Live Photos, from adding filters, tweaking adjustments, cropping, and rotating. If that weren't enough, you can go a step beyond and pick new thumbnails, trim the clip, or make them loop or bounce.Since a Facebook profile video already loops, however, using a looping or bouncing Live Photo may be unnecessary. And you can trim clips, crop them, and choose a thumbnail image in Facebook before setting them as your profile video, so you don't have to worry about that too much beforehand.

Method 1: Convert Your Live Photo with InstagramA really easy way, though not without losing some image quality, is to convert your Live Photo into a Boomerang within Instagram Stories. So, If you don't already have Instagram, be sure to download the app to try this method out.App Store Link: Instagram (free) Once signed up and in Instagram, tap your profile icon at the top of the main page to access Stories, then swipe up to see your Story feed. If you have taken your Live Photo within the last 24 hours, then you should see it there. Tap on the Live Photo you want to use to edit in Stories. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks From there, turning your Live Photo into a Boomerang is easy, and basically entails long-pressing on the photo to convert it into a Boomerang, and downloading into the Photos app. Of course, we have an in-depth guide on this topic, so feel free to tap on the following link to learn more.Don't Miss: Turn Your Live Photos Into Boomerangs on Instagram

Method 2: Convert Your Live Photo with Motion StillsIf you'd rather preserve your Live Photo in full quality before uploading it as your Facebook profile pic, then I have two more options for you. First up is an app from Google called Motion Stills, which you can download from the App Store for free.App Store Link: Motion Stills (free) All your Live Photos will be shown within Motion Stills' main feed, so tap on the Live Photo you want to convert for Facebook. Your Live Photo will now be shown in constant motion, and the "Motion Stills" icon (two half circles) will be set to reduce shakiness in the video. Tap that icon to remove the effect, which will give you your original Live Photo, shakiness and all. Also, you can choose to set the video as normal (the two triangles icon with the left side in white) or bounce it (with both triangles white). Images by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks Once you've set the Live Photo's effects to your liking, tap on the arrow along the bottom right-hand side of your image, then tap "Share Video" to convert it as a video. When the share sheet opens up, select "Save Video" to save it to the Photos app. Once you've done that, skip ahead to the "Uploading Your Live Photo" section below. Images by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks

Method 3: Convert Your Live Photo with LivelyIf neither of the first two options worked for you, then an app called Lively is your best bet. You can download the Lively app either by going to the App Store or simply tapping on the link below.App Store Link: Lively (free) Once installed, you'll see all your Live Photos in a homepage feed within the app. Tap on the image that you would like to convert, and your Live Photo will now be shown as a GIF. Tap on "Movie" at the top, and if you want to crop your Live Photo and haven't done so already, Lively will let you do so before saving it as a video. You can also do this later on Facebook, as you'll soon see. When ready, tap on "Export Movie" at the bottom. From here, hit "Save" to add it to your Photos app, then move on to the next section in this article.

Uploading Your Live Photo as Your Facebook Profile VideoNow that you've converted your Live Photo, open up the Facebook app, then tap on the hamburger icon and hit "View your profile" at the top. Once there, tap on "Edit" at the bottom right of your profile icon, or you can just tap on the profile photo itself, then you'll see a menu of options. Tap on "Select Profile Video."Here, you'll be able to select the video you want to upload from your Camera Roll in Photos. Tap on the new video that you just converted, and you'll be presented with some decent options for it. You can trim the clip, crop it, remove sound, and/or change the thumbnail image. You can also tap on "Make Temporary" to make the profile video last only 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, or a custom amount of time. When you're satisfied, tap on "Use" to upload it as your new Facebook profile video.Don't Miss: This Boomerang Hack Lets You Post Apple's Live Photos on Instagram Images by Bettina Mangiaracina/Gadget Hacks And that's all there is to it. Your Facebook profile video will now loop endlessly while someone is looking at your profile. Profile videos are public, so keep that in mind when doing this.Uploading a moving image to your Facebook profile picture is a good way to stand out among other accounts. It also hasn't really caught on yet, so this is a good time to get creative with the feature and get ahead of the pack. As always, stay tuned with us as we uncover more Facebook tips and tricks to amp up your profile page.Amboy Manalo contributed to this story.Don't Miss: How to Turn GIFs into Live Photos on Your iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: This Linux-Style Launcher Turns Your Home Screen into a Command Prompt
Running commands on Linux seems so complicated for the layman that it may as well be a foreign language. But for the die-hard terminal users, or for those who are just curious about the Linux experience, there's a new Android launcher that gives your home screen a command line makeover.Linux CLI Launcher by Francesco Andreuzzi basically transforms your Android into a terminal window, requiring you to type out commands to start apps and explore your phone's system as opposed to the familiar process of tapping on icons. It's a great way to practice or learn about Linux commands, and it has the added benefit of securing your phone against unwanted access. While it sounds like a daunting proposition, Linux CLI Launcher has some nifty features to ensure your experience is as painless as possible. The command line also seamlessly blends in with the rest of your phone's interface, so you can access your device's status and navigation bars like you normally would. If you'd like to give this interesting launcher a go, read on to find out how.Don't Miss: Why SafetyNet Shows That Google Actually Cares About Android Root

Install Linux CLI LauncherLinux CLI Launcher is available on the Play Store as a free download. So to get started, head over there or click on the link below if you'd like to give this app a try.Install Linux CLI Launcher for free from the Google Play Store Next, tap your home button, then select "T-UI" from the list, and choose "Always" to make it your new default home screen app. You can always change this later by heading to the Apps menu in Settings, then selecting "Home App" and choosing a different launcher.

Getting Started with Linux CLI LauncherWhen you first access your new home screen, it'll take you through a short tutorial, so make sure to read carefully. Linux CLI Launcher has built in features geared towards easing new users into the process of using command lines. The biggest of these is a shortcut feature gives you instant suggestions when you type the first letter of an app you wish to open. For example, typing the letter "C" will yield apps and programs that start off with that letter. So if you wish to access Chrome to browse the web, or Messaging to send a text to someone, all you need to do is input the first letter and tap on the completed word once it pops up. Don't Miss: Turn Your Galaxy S8 into a Google PixelIt's also pretty easy to call someone using Linux CLI Launcher. Typing "call," followed by a space and the contact's name or a phone number will automatically send an outgoing call as soon as you hit enter. Alternatively, you can type call followed by any letter which will generate available contacts that start with that letter, then you can call that contact simply by tapping on his or her name. Uninstalling apps you no longer need is quite easy to do using this launcher, as all you have to do is type "uninstall" plus the name of the app, or choose from the list of apps that pop up, then the launcher will proceed to delete the app. Obviously these examples are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what you can do using Linux CLI Launcher on your smartphone. There's so much more you can do with this launcher, so if you have any questions or tips on how to use it, feel free to leave a comment below.Don't Miss: The 5 Best Phones for Rooting & ModdingFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Install Sony's Newest Album & Walkman Apps on Almost Any Android
Sony's Xperia line of smartphones are beautifully crafted and have many great features. But considering the fact that Sony has evolved into a media company over the last two decades, it's their media-related apps that stand out the most.Just recently, they've updated their software for Android Lollipop, and as quickly as they did that, developer Thomas DE SA got to work on porting the Xperia's Album and Walkman (now called Music) apps to other Android devices. These apps can be installed even if you're not rooted, and they feature Sony's signature design, so if you've been looking for a new music player or photo viewer, you needn't look any further. Step 1: Download the Album & Music AppsWhen you're ready to get started, point your device's web browser to this link to grab a copy of the APK installer file for Sony's Album app. When that's done, tap this link to download the Walkman (aka Music) app.

Step 2: Install Sony AlbumTo install the Album app, tap the corresponding "Download complete" notification in your status bar. From here, press "Install," then tap "Open" when that's finished. Sony Album comes with a free cloud backup service to store all of your photos. If you'd like to use this feature, tap the "Sign Up" button, then create an account from the Sony website that comes up next.Beyond that, Album has an intuitive interface that features a side navigation menu for accessing categories and a photo stream view that packs many thumbnails onto one screen.

Step 3: Install Sony WalkmanTo install the Walkman app, tap the "Download complete" notification again, then press "Install" and "Open." From here, you'll see your new music player's beautiful interface. It features the same side navigation drawer as Album, and the colors on the now playing screen are automatically matched to the album artwork. While the Movie app hasn't been ported yet, you can still grab a copy of the older version from our previous guide. It won't be as Lollipop-friendly as the Albums and Music apps above, but it's better than nothing. What are your favorite features of Sony's new media apps? How To: Root Your OnePlus 6T with Magisk

How To: Root Your OnePlus 6T with Magisk
With the recent launch of the OnePlus 6T, the company continues to impress us with some of the best phones when it comes to the rooting and modding. OnePlus has made it easy enough to get up and running with the rooting process as fast as possible. The OnePlus devices follow the same core principles Google uses for their Pixels, which is excellent news for both the user and the development side of things.Whether you're a pro at the rooting stuff or just getting started, the OnePlus 6T is a solid choice for diving into the modding scene. The most popular and universal method of gaining root access on any new Android device is going to be through the method of installing Magisk. One of the main benefits of using Magisk is that you can keep Google's SafetyNet flag from being tripped, which could cause certain apps to deny user access.

Step 1: Unlock Your BootloaderBefore you can get started with installing Magisk to your device, you're going to have to make sure your bootloader is unlocked. Doing so will allow you to install any custom firmware that is compatible with your device. If you have not unlocked the bootloader yet, go ahead and check out the guide on how to do that.Don't Miss: How to Unlock the Bootloader on Your OnePlus 6T

Step 2: Install TWRPOnce the bootloader is unlocked, you'll be able to move forward with installing TWRP to your device. This is a custom recovery needed to flash custom firmware and ZIP files, such as Magisk. If you have not installed TWRP to your OnePlus 6T yet, check out the guide on how to do that.Don't Miss: How to Install TWRP Recovery on Your OnePlus 6T

Step 3: Download the Magisk FrameworkYou now need to download the main Magisk ZIP file, which contains both the core Magisk system itself and the Magisk Manager app as well. The app provides you with an interface for installing modules, managing root-related permissions for your apps, and even allowing you to hide specific "problem" apps from tripping Google's SafetyNet via the Magisk Hide feature. Download the file below using your phone or transfer the file from your computer to your phone's "Download" folder.Download the latest version of Magisk (.zip)

Step 4: Boot into TWRPNow that you have the Magisk file you need to gain root access; you need to boot into TWRP so you can execute the install process. Bring up the power menu on your device by long-pressing the power button, then select "Recovery." If you don't see the "Recovery" option, you'll need to enable Advanced Reboot.

Step 5: Flash MagiskIf you are running the latest version of TWRP that decrypts the internal storage (3.2.3-6), you will be prompted to enter your PIN or password. Once you do that, you should be on the main menu of TWRP and ready to move onto installing Magisk. Start by tapping "Install," then navigate to the folder where the Magisk ZIP file is stored. The default location most web browsers save files to will be in the "Download" folder. Tap the file you want to install and then initiate the "Swipe to confirm Flash" slider to begin. It will now install Magisk to your device, so let it do its thing, and you'll be ready to go in no time! Once you see it successfully installed, go ahead and tap "Reboot System" to get back into your operating system. Now, head into the app drawer on your home launcher, and you should notice a new app installed called "Magisk Manager."

Step 6: Verify Root & SafetyNet StatusGo ahead and open the Magisk Manager app, and from the main menu, you want to use the "Tap to start SafetyNet check" option. You should be prompted to download an extension that is needed for Magisk to begin the SafetyNet check. Tap "Yes" to confirm the download, and then within a few seconds, you should see the awesome "SafetyNet Check Success" message. This means you not only have full root access, but your device has also passed Google's SafetyNet checks, which is precisely what you are looking for! No need to worry about losing access to apps such as Netflix, Android Pay, and even some newer games all the same. Now you are ready to explore what the world of rooting has to offer to your OnePlus 6T.
