How To: Glorious 8-Bit Video Game Sounds & Ringtones Are Here for Your Nexus
Practically every kid in the '80s would rush home after school to put in some time on the first-gen Nintendo before their parents got home. Games like Super Mario Bros. and Super Smash Bros. were synonymous with fun times, and to this day, call up a wave of nostalgia amongst Generation-Xers.Even if you weren't around to experience the golden age of gaming firsthand, there's just something inherently cool about those old 8-bit cartridges, which is one of the reasons why old-school emulators are so popular on our modern-day devices. The sounds they made were so simple and iconic that you're probably even playing back the Mario theme in your head as you read this.If so, you'll be happy to know that Nexus user JewellSimon has made a flashable ZIP of many great 8-bit game sounds and theme songs. It replaces the system sounds on any Nexus device with various Nintendo sound effects, and even throws in a handful of theme songs to use as ringtones. With this mod installed, you'll finally get to be the coolest kid on your block. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Download the 8-Bit Sounds ZIP FileTo start, go ahead and point the browser on your Nexus to this link. The flashable ZIP file will start downloading automatically, but wait until it's finished before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Boot into RecoveryWhen the ZIP has finished downloading, power your device completely off. Next, hold the Volume Down button with one finger, then press and hold the Power button with another finger. On the screen that comes up, tap the Volume Down button twice to highlight Recovery Mode, then hit the Power button to select it.

Step 3: Install the 8-Bit Sounds ZIP FileFrom TWRP Recovery's main screen, tap Install to begin. From here, navigate to the Download folder on your SD card, then select the 8bitsounds.zip file. Next, swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to install the mod. When it's finished, simply tap Reboot System. When you get back up, your system sounds will have been replaced by awesome 8-bit sound effects. Screen touches are now Mario fireballs, and wireless charging triggers a "1-Up" sound, for instance. Additionally, you will now have several 8-bit theme songs to choose from as your device's ringtone or notification sound.
Reverting to Stock SoundsIf for some reason you decide that you'd rather have those boring old stock sounds back, there's an easy fix. Simply download this file, then boot into recovery and flash it.So which sound effect is your favorite? Mine is the 1-Up charging sound, honestly. And which theme song did you set as your ringtone?
