How To: Convert Your HTC One into a Developer Edition for Super Fast Sense Updates
HTC has made it their mission to get updates out to its devices as quickly as possible, with new builds slated for release 90-days after Google finalizes a buildâ€”this is dubbed HTC Advantage.After Google I/O, the company announced they would have the Android L version of Sense ready to ship within three months of the official release, which is pretty much unheard of for skinned Android ROMs (we're looking at you, TouchWiz).Keeping with that same time frame, HTC released the Android 4.4.3 version of their Sense 6 ROM, but if you do not have a Developer or Unlocked Edition of the M8, you are SOL, thanks mainly to carriers delaying release until they can inject their own crap into the software.However, every M8 is pretty much the same. Yes, they have support for different cellular frequenciesâ€”depending on what carrier they are attached toâ€”but other than that they are identical. Because of this, we can simply flash over all the system files of a Developer Edition model, and turn any GSM M8 into a Dev Edition. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Sprint, Verizon, and other CDMA-based customers will still need to wait on your carrier to issue a release, or for a developer to port over a ROM.
Before We Get StartedThis process is pretty straightforward, but it does come with some prerequisites.Your M8 must be a GSM model, like AT&T, T-Mobile, and most international variants. S-Off and an unlocked bootloader are a must. ADB and fastboot are going to need to be installed on your computer; both Mac and Windows PCs will work. USB debugging must be enabled from your Developer settings. This process will WIPE YOUR DATA, so a complete backup of all your files. That also includes your internal storage, because that will be wiped as well. Once these prereqs are out of the way, you'll be ready to start the process, although I'd recommend reading through the guide once and downloading the necessary files prior to beginning this process.

Step 1: Change CID to SuperCIDThe CID, or Carrier ID, of your device determines what carrier it is attached to, and what ROMs can be flashed to it. This is what prevents an AT&T or T-Mobile ROM from being flashed to a different carrier's device. Since we will be flashing the Dev edition, we will be using that specific CID: BS_US002.Plug your device into your computer, open up cmd/terminal, and enter the following commands followed by the Enter key each time.adb reboot bootloader fastboot oem writecid BS_US002 fastboot reboot

Step 2: Find Serial Number & Download FilesDownload and extract the TWRP backup file. You will then have to place the files in the TWRP folder in your internal storage. If you don't have a backups folder, go ahead a create one. The folder structure should look like this: TWRP/BACKUPS/[SERIAL NUMBER]/BackupName. The [SERIAL NUMBER] portion will need to be changed to your device's serial number, which can be found in Settings -> About -> Phone Identity.

Step 3: Flash Stock RecoveryWith your backup in place, it's time to start the conversion. You will not need to flash TWRP, but you will need to download the stock recovery.Now enter the following commands:adb reboot bootloader fastboot flash recovery {location-of-Stock-Recovery.img} fastboot erase cache fastboot reboot-bootloader

Step 4: Boot into TWRP & Wipe DataBecause the stock recovery is needed to apply OTA updates, we will only boot into TWRP instead of completely installing it. To do that, download the latest version of TWRP, then boot into it from fastboot:fastboot boot {location-of-TWRP.img} Now that you are in TWRP, tap Wipe -> Advanced Wipe and select Dalvik Cache, Cache, and Data.

Step 5: Restore from TWRPYour device is now clean of your old ROM, so all that is left to do is to select Restore from the main TWRP screen, then pick the backup file from Step 2 and apply it.

Step 6: Reboot & Check for OTATo ensure that everything worked out fine, check to make sure you can receive OTAs from Settings -> About -> Software updates. It will take a few updates before you are all caught up to Android 4.4.3, so keep checking for updates.

Step 7: Manually Flash OTA (Optional)Sometimes it takes some time for you to get an OTA pushed to your device, so if you are not the patient type, go ahead and download the OTA.zip, which will update you to Android 4.4.3.After it finishes downloading, reboot into recovery by pressing and holding the Volume Down and Power button for about 15 seconds, then select RECOVERY from the HBOOT menu.Now that you are in the stock recovery, hold Volume Up and then press the Power button. All that is left to do is install the update, apply from phone storage -> 0/ -> OTA.zip. And that's all she wrote. This process may seem a little daunting, but trust me when I say it is totally worth it to have quick OTAs and a life free of carrier bloatware.Feel free to root this ROM, but keep in mind that if you install a custom recovery, you will not be able to apply official OTAs. I'm going to tell you how it can be done at your home and with a lot less money. You just need a few components and a little bit of concentration before we can get the party started!
Step 1: Get Your Components and EquipmentThere are a few things you may need to start with. Some, you might find in your home; others are easily and cheaply available at your nearest electronic component shop.LEDs An Old Headphone/Hands Free Set Transistor (TIP-31) Resistors (500 ohm and 1k ohm) PCB/Vero Boards Soldering Iron and Soldering Wire Wire and Wire Cutter AA Batteries/one 9V Battery (The use of any battery depends on how many LEDs you are using and the connection scheme (parallel of series) A series connection will need more power a parallel configuration like I am using here will require less energy)

Step 2: Connecting the Circuit Follow the steps below and be sure to read the safety precautions I have mentioned at the end.Place all LEDs on the Vero board, pins down. Take care of the LED polarity (the longer end is the anode!). Connect them in a parallel configuration by soldering all the negative ends together and then soldering all the positive ends in the same fashion as shown in the circuit diagram above. Then connect all the positive ends that are soldered together to the collector of the transistor (take care of the pin configuration of TIP-31 as given earlier). Connect all the negative ends (which are soldered together) to the positive end of the battery. The base of the transistor is to be connected to the 500 ohm resistor and the emitter to the negative end of the battery. Take the old handsfree that you have and cut off one earphone. Out come the two strands. Solder both strands across the resistor (Polarity does not matter here). All you now need is to plug in the audio jack in to your iPod or mp3 player and enjoy the lightening music!
Step 3: Make It Look GoodIf you want to improve it aesthetically you could probably improvise with a plastic/cardboard box and make some holes through it and place the Vero board inside it such that the LEDs show at the top of the box and then you could spray-paint it, well, golden or silver, whatever you like!
Step 4: Remember Safety!In the case of LEDs, polarity matters where with the ear phone strands it does not. Handle LEDs with care because they are susceptible to burning by a violent current surge. In case of a 9V battery, a resistor of 1kohm can be placed in series with the battery if the LED's are susceptible to burning.

Amongst the trove of high-end features on the Galaxy S5, the display may be the most impressive. Sporting a 5.1-inch Full HD Super AMOLED (Samsung's version of OLED) display with 1920 x 1080 resolution and 432 pixels per inch, Samsung's flagship has one of the best smartphone screens currently on the market.One perk of having an OLED screen is that each pixel produces its own light. When the pixels produce color, each organic light-emitting diode gives off light. But when that color is black, no light is emitted as the pixels aren't actually on. In other words, when black is displayed, you're actually increasing battery life, as the battery isn't being used at all (at least in terms of the display).But enough with the backstory. Today, I'm going to show you another advantage for having an OLED display and its on, but not on, black pixel display, and that's gesture control when the screen is off! Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
This will also work for Moto X owners, as they too have OLED displays. Other device owners can try the app, but it most likely will not function properly.

Step 1: Install KnockrKnockr, from Angs Apps, works with OLED displays like the one on the Galaxy S5, allowing you to chose from a number of gestures when the screen is off in order to quickly access certain apps or unlock your device. This is possible due to the properties of the screen; black pixels are "turned off", but effectively still working. The name of the app and its functionality suggest it may work in a similar fashion to the "Knock", or tap, features on devices like the LG G2 and HTC One, but this is entirely different. While those apps rely on sensors, Knockr simply leaves your screen on with a completely black display, meaning that you won't constantly have sensors listening and draining battery.

Step 2: Assign Actions to GesturesOpen Knockr and tap on a specific gesture to select which action you want to assign to it. A list of applications will show, as well as the options to have the screen unlock, turn on, or have the gesture do nothing at all.

Step 3: Adjust App SettingsSlide over to the Settings section to turn toggle Knockr on/off and to enable Power Management mode, which turns off Knockr when your device is face down or in your pocket. Now anytime the screen is off, you can double-tap, swipe, or long-press on the display to bring up whatever applications or actions you have setâ€”and it's fast, too!
With a Little Work, Knockr Can Be AwesomeAs a fairly new app, there are a few bugs that you should be aware of:Multitasking and Back buttons may stay on Notification LEDs not working (because the display is technically "on") Power button not turning on the screen as usual. Personally, I didn't have the multitasking/back buttons stay on longer than their scheduled timeout, but the notification LEDs would not turn on for me, and the power button was glitchy when turning on the screen.Hopefully these bugs will be fixed in coming updates, as this application is very useful for quick app access, or just to unlock your device with a quick gesture.

Once logged in, set Bitmado as the current LWP (live wallpaper).

Following New "Mados"The Front Page displays the currently "Hot" images by default. You can select what you want to appear in the front page in the drop-down menu. As you can see, each image is designated a category, or mado, that helps identify its theme. Select an image that you like and you'll be able to set that image as the current wallpaper or follow the mado to have the wallpaper change to images in the category. The mados we follow will be shown in the Manage Mados section.

Searching for New MadosYou don't have to rely on the front page to get your mados. Use "Explore" in the main menu to search for a mado by name, or scroll through the many already available. You can follow any mado that you like, but be careful, there are some that are NSFW, so make sure to only follow the mados you want to appear on your home screen. If you follow Random, there might be a random image of an ass cheek or something, so be cautious.

Changing the Shuffle FrequencyManually selecting a wallpaper that you want to apply immediately is called a Sticky, meaning that your selected wallpaper will remain in place until you want to change it, disabling the automatic shuffle. Click on the small pin next to the image to "Stick" it to your home screen. This can be changed by going into the app's settings and changing the Shuffle Frequency. Super will change the wallpaper every time you lock your phone.

Bumping & Up-Voting ImagesUp-voting an image helps to push it toward popularity, while a down-vote will remove that particular image from your wallpaper shuffle. A bump is similar to the Kudos we use here at WonderHowToâ€”the more bumps you give, the higher profile that image receives. You earn bumps by submitting your own images and voting on images submitted by others.

There Are Some Minor Lingering IssuesThere were a few times when the app lost its connection or showed me a server error, even though my data was working fine. This is problematic because if you can't access Bitmado, your wallpapers won't load and you'll be left with a giant black screen with the Bitmado's logo. All in all, Bitmado is an app with a lot of potential. The available wallpapers are endless and the fact that I don't have to touch a thing and can still get a bunch of cool wallpapers every time I open up my phone is pretty clutch. The app is fairly new, so I am hoping the connection issues will be fixed sooner rather than later.

With the release of Android 9.0 Pie, Google's focusing on digital health. Digital Wellbeing is a new set of features designed to help you curb your own smartphone addiction. Starting now, the beta version is available, and Google's looking for testers.Although Android 9.0 Pie is officially available for Pixel smartphones, these new Digital Wellbeing features aren't included out of the box. App Timers, Dashboard, Do Not Disturb, and Wind Down (which collectively are called Digital Wellbeing) are currently available for testing, but require a few steps beforehand.

Make Sure You QualifyIn order to use the Digital Wellbeing feature, there are few prerequisites. First, you must have a Pixel device, so either the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, or Pixel 2 XL. As of now, even though other phones have access to Android Pie, the Digital Wellbeing beta is currently only available to Google devices.Second, you need to have Android 9.0 Pie on your device. Since Android Pie is already being pushed out to Pixel devices, you simply need to wait for the official OTA and update your phone. When you see a color depicted on your computer, smartphone, or tablet, odds are it was processed as a hex triplet before it was rendered. Most modern websites and operating systems use a hexadecimal coding system to signify certain colors, and these are represented as 6 letters and numbers.Realizing that a clock also contains 6 digits (HH:MM:SS), developer Structix created an Xposed module that will make Android's status bar clock change colors throughout the day. By giving each minute a different color that matches its corresponding hex value, this mod should appeal to themers and geeks alike. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install ClockhexTo begin, head to the Download section of your Xposed Installer app and search for Clockhex, then tap the top result. From here, swipe over to the Versions tab, then hit the "Download" button next to the most recent entry. Within a few seconds, Android's installer interface should come right up, so tap "Install" on this screen. When that's finished, you'll get a notification from Xposed telling you that the module hasn't been activated yet and that a reboot is needed. Just tap the "Activate and reboot" button on this notification, and Xposed will handle the rest for you.

Step 2: Configure Clockhex (Optional)When you get back up, your status bar clock will already be colored. But to access additional options, open the Clockhex app from your app drawer. This interface should give you a good idea of how Clockhex works. As the minutes tick by, the time is converted into a hex triplet on the fly. This value is then used to generate a hex color, which is displayed as the background here.To see the app's available options, tap the "Settings" button at the top of the screen. From here, support for the xHaloFloatingWindow Xposed module can be enabled if you use that particular module. Additionally, the format can be switched from 24 to 12 hours, but I'd recommend leaving this option alone if you want more variety in colors. To brighten the color palette for your status bar clock, tap the "Hex Multiplier" option at the top of the screen. Enter a value between 0-195 in the field belowâ€”the higher you go, the brighter the coloring on your status bar clock. Beyond that, just kick back and wait for the clock to change colors. This occurs every minute, though it may be rather subtle at times. What time of day does your favorite color come up?
