How To: The 5 Best Free Twitter Clients for Android

In a way, Twitter is the town square of our era, where people can share and discuss ideas on a wide variety of topics. While the tech giant has its own app for Android, it's pretty bare-bones when it comes to features. This has paved the way for third-party clients that are rich with customization options. It's easy to get lost in the sea of Twitter client apps available on the Google Play Store, and that makes finding the right fit a time-consuming process. But you're in luck — we've done the legwork for you by comparing the top Twitter clients in granular detail, looking at all of the features to find out which one's the best. After countless hours of research, we're confident that the apps below are the cream of the crop when it comes to free third-party Twitter clients for Android.
Table of ContentsComparison Chart Chart Key Methodology App 1: Owly for Twitter App 2: TweetCaster App 3: Friendly for Twitter App 4: TwitPane App 5: Tweecha Lite Summary

Comparison Chart Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks
Key Comparison PointsPlay Store Rating: The app's overall rating among users. Supported Accounts: The number of simultaneous Twitter logins you can use. Mixing work and pleasure can land you in trouble, so having a client that lets you stay on top of multiple accounts saves you from the headache of manually switching between them. Price for Pro Version: The price for the full version of the app. Pro Features: Purchasing the full or pro version of an app will usually unlock more features, along with removal of advertisements. Ad Type: Since these are free apps, ads are a necessary evil that we have to live with. Some apps are better at dealing with it, however, and display ads in ingenious ways to make them almost unnoticeable. Widgets: This handy option lets you see new tweets right on your device's home screen. Interactive Notifications: When supported, this small but useful feature enables you to preview new tweets and other alerts to decide whether to open the app to view in full or simply dismiss. App Shortcuts: Similar to the iPhone's 3D Touch, this feature lets you shoot tweets or send messages on the fly simply by performing a long press on the app's icon and tapping on one of the available options from the popup that appears. In-App YouTube Playback: Watching YouTube videos from within the app itself is ideal, as it saves you from the hassle of having to switch between apps and lets you continue looking through your timeline without skipping a beat. Instagram Image Support: Basically the same as watching YouTube videos above, but in this case, while viewing content such as images and GIFs that originate from Instagram. Dark Mode: Dark theme support has become a desirable feature for many, and is not only easier on your eyes, but can also save battery life. Customizable UI: Having the ability to personalize an app's user interface has become standard for many apps, and can range from applying different colors to changing font size. Swipe to Navigate: Navigating between numerous tabs can be tedious when performed with taps alone, so having the ability to swipe sideways from one page to another has a big impact in enhancing user experience. Schedule Posts: This feature is especially handy for habitual posters, as it enables them to automatically tweet out ideas and thoughts in regular intervals to keep their content flowing. Post Muting: Your Twitter feed is constantly bombarded with distracting posts that often bury important tweets. Muting these annoying posts clears out your feed and ensures you only view what you need to. Download Content: Having this functionality is extremely useful, as it lets you save media into your device to enjoy anytime you want, without having to revisit the original tweet. Post GIFs Oftentimes, a GIF can convey your thoughts and leave a stronger impression than words alone. Location Tagging: This feature lets you share your location and is helpful for arranging meetups. Save Drafts: A brilliant idea often comes out of nowhere, though it sometimes takes a little more time to string the right words together to properly convey the message. This is where drafts come in handy. Search Location: Where the search function is located inside of the app. As a vital feature, we preferred apps that let you search in one tap from the navigation bar over apps that force you to tap a menu button, then find the search option. Send Direct Messages: The ability to send private messages to other Twitter users that are not visible to the public.
How We Chose These AppsTo narrow down the field of Twitter apps, we set up some ground rules. First, all apps had to have a free version, so that ruled out great options like Talon and Tweetings. Then, to ensure we're dealing with the best of the best, all apps had to have a Play Store rating of 4.3 stars or higher to make this list. This ruled out several popular Twitter apps such as Falcon, Plume and Finch. From there, we whittled our original list down to five apps based on how the apps scored in the comparison points above. That left us with the five best Twitter client apps, which I'll highlight in detail below.

App 1: Owly for TwitterOwly for Twitter takes the top spot thanks to useful features that seamlessly blend together to enhance your Twitter experience, relatively free of charge. Owly gives you the freedom to add as many Twitter accounts to meet your personal and professional needs, and that's just the start.Play Store Link Owly for Twitter (free) Owly offers the most options for UI customization, letting you tweak its headers, navigation bar location, and even change the font style for a totally unique look. The app also gives you multiple dark themes to choose from, including blue, black, and even purple.Timeline filters are another strong suit of Owly. These let you declutter your feed to only display tweets that you actually read and give you further options to filter out distractions such as retweets, replies, and video autoplay through a series of toggles found within its settings page. As far as ads go, Owly displays them as promoted content that blends into your Twitter feed for less distractions. (1) Media attachments are prominently displayed by default. (2) You can hide pictures, GIFs, & videos, however, for easier browsing. If you're big into downloading media, Owly has you covered as well. The app lets you download all types of media directly onto your device, including GIFs, videos, and images. In addition, Owly also supports widgets and app shortcuts, so you can view and post tweets, search for a user, or even send a message from the comfort of your device's home screen.Limitations with the app are few and far between. These include a search function that's buried behind the three-dot overflow menu and the lack of swipe-based controls for navigation between different tabs like direct messages and timeline. Fortunately, Owly has offset this by giving you the option to place the navigation bar on the bottom of the screen for easier reach, which comes in handy if you have a device with a large screen like the Note 9.

App 2: TweetCasterTweetCaster is another great Twitter client that comes with a healthy dose of features that other apps would normally charge for. For instance, the app lets you add as many Twitter accounts as you want without having to pay for a pro version, which is incredibly handy if you have two or more accounts for both private and work-related use.Play Store Link: Install TweetCaster (free) Another standout feature found in TweetCaster is its Smart Filter system, which you can access through the overflow menu button on the top-right. This lets you filter out the noise and display only keyword-specified tweets, posts that contain media, a gallery view, or tweets with links, and it even lets you hide retweeted content. If those weren't enough, the app sends you separate notifications for each account along with a short preview, so there's no need to manually switch accounts to view new content.Similar to Owly, TweetCaster has a wide variety of light and dark themes that you can apply for a more custom feed. Unfortunately, the app's UI isn't as flexible, and while you can change the app's font size to aid in reading, TweetCaster doesn't give you the option to set its navigation bars to a location of your choosing. This is far from a deal breaker, however, as TweetCaster comes with gesture-based navigation to let you instantly view other tabs simply by swiping sideways. To further separate itself from the rest of the pack, TweetCaster gives you the ability to schedule posts at a later time, along with the option to save them as drafts so you can fire off the tweet when you're satisfied with it, without having to start over. In addition to that, TweetCaster also supports in-app viewing of media from both YouTube and Instagram for unimpeded Twitter feed browsing. As awesome as TweetCaster is, it has some shortcomings which ultimately kept it from grabbing the top spot. Most notably, TweetCaster is fairly limited when it comes to directly downloading media content, only letting you save images. And while the app gives you the option to upload videos and GIFs, it redirects you to a YouTube login page that results in an error.Static banner ads are ever present in TweetCaster, and are permanently set along the bottom of the screen. While relatively unobtrusive, these banner ads are still an eyesore, especially when compared to promoted content found within apps like Owly that seamlessly blend in with your timeline. If you want to get rid of these ads for good, be prepared to shell out $4.99 for an ad-free experience.

App 3: Friendly for TwitterFriendly for Twitter has a vibrant, eye-pleasing layout that's easy to access and interact with thanks to an intuitive UI and simplified settings that ensure you spend less time finagling around with the app and more time enjoying the content on your Twitter feed.Play Store Link: Friendly for Twitter (free) Friendly's simple design is intentional — it's been developed specifically to run as efficiently as possible to maximize battery life. This translates to minimal background tasks and services, along with optimized animations to keep battery drain to a minimum. If you want to take power consumption a step further, Friendly even gives you the option to disable all notifications, direct messages, and set the frequency it checks for new tweets at longer intervals to keep your device alive in a pinch. Despite its focus on energy efficiency, Friendly nonetheless comes with a slew of useful features to maximize your Twitter experience.Chief among these features it the ability to download images, videos, and GIFs directly onto your device, and send and receive direct messages containing images and GIFs. Besides those, the app also comes with a dark theme that you can enable for easier nighttime viewing in addition to further preserving battery life. Naturally, Friendly's focus on battery conservation and efficient operation across a multitude of Android devices means means sacrificing some features to achieve those ends. The app lacks some functionality compared to other apps on the list, namely the ability to save drafts for a later date, schedule posts, and support for widgets and app shortcuts.Despite its limitations, Friendly is still a fairly balanced Twitter app that's definitely worth a try. Its user-friendly UI very easy to get accustomed to, and is especially suited for older and mid-tier devices thanks to its battery-efficient design.

App 4: TwitPaneThough not as aesthetically pleasing as Owly or Friendly, TwitPane still manages to set itself apart from the rest of the crowd due to its overall flexibility and customization options. Besides the standard dark theme, the app also lets you change the font size, remove annoying source app texts on the bottom of tweets, and much more.Play Store Link: TwitPane for Twitter (free) Where TwitPane really shines, however, is in its tab customization. The app contains 15 separate tabs that can be accessed via sideways swipe gesture, including tabs for Timeline, Likes, Profile, and Search, just to name a few. To minimize confusion, the app gives you the ability to reorder, remove, or add new tabs to better suit your needs.Additionally, TwitPane comes with a slew of other features that make it competitive with other Twitter apps, such as direct messaging support, the option to download media files directly onto your device, tweet GIFs, save drafts to post later, and more. Thanks to widget and app shortcut support, you can even view and post tweets without having to access the app for added convenience. On the flip side of the coin, TwitPane only lets you sign into three separate accounts, which may be less than ideal if you rely on more than that for social media needs related to your work or hobby. And like TweetCaster, the app features static banner ads that are prominently displayed along the top of the screen.Lastly, TwitPane is also limited as far as third-party support goes — it doesn't let you watch YouTube videos within the app or view content that's hosted on Instagram. In all, TwitPane is still a great choice if you're in the market for a Twitter app that gives you control over what tabs you want to have access to and don't mind the relatively minor issues mentioned above.

App 5: Tweecha LiteLast, but certainly not least, is Tweecha Lite, a simple Twitter app that comes with a number of great features and options to maximize your social media experience without getting lost in UI customization. The app is free to try out, with the option of buying its full version for $5.49 to get rid of banner ads and unlock more features.Play Store Link: Tweecha Lite (free) Tweecha Lite has an astounding 18 separate tabs that cover all the bases with regards to tweeting. Besides the all-important timeline, you also get separate pages for mentions, tweets you made and replies you may have gotten, a search page with its own options for advanced searches, retweets, likes — the list goes on.Obviously, the sheer amount of tabs can make navigating through Tweecha Lite cumbersome, so to aid in getting around, the app employs a simplified navigation bar on the bottom for vital functions like instant tweeting and quick access to all the tabs via a menu button. Additionally, the app gives you the ability to cycle through its pages by swiping left or right. If you're in the habit of carefully crafting tweets before posting them to the world, Tweecha Lite lets you save unsent tweets as drafts that you can revisit and post at a later date. Besides that, the app also comes with a dark theme which can be accessed within "Color settings" section inside the app's settings page. Options to customize the app's UI are fairly limited, however, and basically consist of tweaking background colors of specific tweets for easier sorting. Like TwitPane, Tweecha Lite lets you connect to only three separate accounts off the bat, which is further expanded to a maximum of five after purchasing the full version. Because of this, Tweecha Lite may not be suited for those who have more than three Twitter accounts for work, business, and personal use.Tweecha Lite starts to fall short when it comes to watching YouTube videos, as tapping on them transfers you out of the app itself and into YouTube. This can be a hindrance if you frequently watch YouTube hosted content and quickly move down on your feed to sort through tweets. Unlike TwitPane, however, Tweecha Lite does let you view media files originating from Instagram.Unfortunately, that's just the start of the app's issues. Like TweetCaster, Tweecha Lite only allows for image downloads, with the ability to save GIFs and videos onto your phone out of the question. To make matters worse, sending direct messages isn't supported, making it a non-option for many who rely on the feature.
SummaryIn the end, Owly won out due to its careful balance between ease of use and customization options. It was far from a blowout, however, as the other apps on this list each had standout features that make them solid choices, such as TweetCaster's smart filter, Friendly's battery optimization, and Tweecha Lite's intuitive navigation controls. What's your go-to Twitter client app and what do you love about it? How To: Block Ads in Android's YouTube App Without Using Xposed

How To: Block Ads in Android's YouTube App Without Using Xposed
Traditional root ad-blockers like AdAway and AdBlock Plus have no effect on YouTube anymore. Until now, if you wanted to get rid of the commercials that play before your favorite videos, there have only been two ways—either by paying for a YouTube Red subscription, or by using an Xposed module to modify the YouTube app itself and force it into not showing ads.But Xposed isn't an option for everyone. Some phones have locked bootloaders, which means no TWRP and no Xposed Framework. And then there's the fact that Xposed breaks Android Pay and similar services, which is a deal breaker for a lot of people. But developer Arter97 has finally found a way around this. He modified the stock YouTube app itself to not show ads, which is basically what Xposed would do, but bundled into one package. Ultimately, this means you only need root to block ads in Android's YouTube app, and it's a fairly simple process.

Step 1: Find Your DPI & Processor TypeThe ad-free YouTube APK comes in several different variants that are device-specific. As such, you'll need to know your phone or tablet's processor type and DPI value before you download the app. If you're not sure about your DPI, you can see this number with an app called DPI Checker, which is pretty straightforward.Install DPI Checker for free from the Google Play Store Then, to find your processor type, you can use an app called Droid Hardware Info. It's not quite as straightforward as DPI Checker, so we've covered the process with a full guide, which you can read at the following link.Don't Miss: How to See What Kind of Processor You Have (ARM, ARM64, or x86)

Step 2: Download the Right APK for Your DeviceNow that you know your DPI value and processor type, download the ad-free YouTube APK for your particular device using one of the following links:ARM64 Devices (Any DPI) ARM Devices (240 DPI) ARM Devices (320 DPI) ARM Devices (480 DPI) x86 Devices (480 DPI) Note: Future versions of this app can be downloaded at the developer's website

Step 3: Remove the Old YouTube AppNext up, you'll need to get rid of the stock YouTube app so that you can install the modified version. To do that, I'd suggest using Titanium Backup. So head to the Backup/Restore menu in Titanium Backup, then select the YouTube app from the list. If you want to be on the safe side, you can tap the "Backup!" button on the popup—but to remove the app, just tap the red "Uninstall!" button. From there, confirm your choice on the popup, then you'll be ready to install the ad-free version of YouTube.

Step 4: Create a New 'YouTube' Folder on Your System PartitionNext up, open your favorite file browser and head to the /system/app folder on the root partition of your device. From here, create a new folder, and name it "YouTube" (note the capitalization). From here, long-press the folder you just created, then choose "Permissions" from the menu. Next, set the "Owner" category to Read, Write, and Execute, then set all other categories to just Read and Execute. Or, if your file browser is capable of entering octal permission numbers, just set the value to 0755.

Step 5: Copy the APK to the New Folder & RebootNext up, head to the Download folder on your SD Card or internal storage, where you'll find the ad-free YouTube APK that you downloaded in Step 2. From here, just copy the APK, then head into to the YouTube folder you just created, and paste the file directly in here. When you're done, simply reboot your phone so that the changes will take effect.

Step 6: Enjoy Ad-Free YouTube VideosWhen you get back up, you can continue using the YouTube app as you normally would, but with one main difference: All of the ads will now be gone. The only downside to this method is that you can't update the app through the Google Play Store, but all you'll need to do in the future is just head to the developer's website, grab the latest version, then replace the APK in that /system/app/YouTube folder with the newer file. How To: Open Third-Party Apps from Unidentified Developers in macOS

How To: Open Third-Party Apps from Unidentified Developers in macOS
Apple has a built-in way to protect you from opening up potentially malicious apps on your computer in Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, and macOS Sierra. This setting, named Gatekeeper, will never stop you from installing apps from the Mac App Store, but it could from anywhere else. If it's an app you're sure you want to install on your system, here's how to do it.

Choosing Your Gatekeeper OptionsOpen up your "System Preferences" and head to "Security & Privacy." In the "General" tab, you'll see a section called "Allow apps downloaded from." In order to change these settings, you'll have to click on the lock icon below and input your admin password. Once that's out of the way, you can choose between three options:Mac App Store Mac App Store and identified developers Anywhere
1. Just the Mac App StoreThe safest option to choose here would be the "Mac App Store," since Apple reviews all apps that are accepted in their store and can remove them quickly if necessary. Basically, you'll know that your Mac will be as free as possible from malware if you use this option only.
2. Mac App Store & Trusted DevelopersThe next option also trusts apps from "identified developers," which are basically developers with a unique Developer ID from Apple who have their apps signed digitally. This is the option I use, since Apple can verify that there hasn't been any tampering with the apps since they were signed.
3. Apps from AnywhereThe last option, "Anywhere," obviously removes Gatekeeper's blocking capabilities on your Mac, letting you install and open any app off the internet, including Automator apps made by individuals. Sometimes these things have malware baked in, so I would recommend using the "identified developers" option and okay installation of apps missing a Developer ID on a case-by-case basis.

Trusting Apps on a Case-by-Case BasisIf you have the "Mac App Store and identified developers" option selected, then whenever you download an app without a Developer ID and try to open it, you'll get the following warning."App Name" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer To bypass this restriction, select "OK" on the popup to close it, then go into the "Security & Privacy" section in your "System Preferences." Below the Gatekeeper options in the "General" tab, you'll see the app that was blocked from opening. To trust it, select "Open Anyway" and that's it.

An Even Shorter Way to Open ThemIf you don't want to go into Systems Preferences to open an app for the first time as shown above, then simply Control+Click on the app in the Finder, then select "Open." You'll see a new popup asking if you're sure you want to run the app on your Mac. Just hit "Open" again and you're set. Big thanks to Michael Cunningham for bringing this trick to my attention in the comments below. This is the best way to keep your Mac running malware-free, while still being able to download and use cool apps that haven't been signed yet. This includes a lot of Automator actions built by regular users to streamline a certain process, like resizing images for the web automatically just by dragging and dropping photos into the app.If you were to build an Automator app yourself, Gatekeeper wouldn't block you from opening it since you never downloaded it from the internet, but any you get from us would. For more information on how Gatekeeper works, check out Apple's overview.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

October 30: The OnePlus 6T What's Rumored & What We're Hoping For

October 30: The OnePlus 6T What's Rumored & What We're Hoping For
OnePlus will be releasing a new phone in the second half of 2018, specifically, an upgrade to their T-series. Over the past two years, #T versions have come out about five months after their predecessors and have included small updates that fix any problems from the previous OnePlus device. While we do know a bit about OnePlus 6T, what it could be is much more exciting. The rumors continue to pour in as we get closer to its launch, which could be as early as October, so we've rounded up some highlights and potential additions that could come with this upgraded OnePlus smartphone. While we don't expect all of the features to make it, we are hopeful that OnePlus will at least hear its community and think about these for the OnePlus 7, since it's unlikely any last-minute tweaks can be made at this point. We broke down the specs into three categories: what is rumored, what is possible, and what we're hoping for. Rumored specs are those leaked by other outlets and reliable sources. Possibles are specifications that potentially could be included in the 6T but aren't rumored yet. Hopes are specs and features that, at this point, is straight up wishful thinking.
Quick Breakdown of the OnePlus 6T's SpecsOS: Android 9.0 Pie Skin: OxygenOS 6.0 CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 GPU: Adreno 630 RAM: 6 or 8 GB Storage: 128 or 256 GB Display: 6.4-inch AMOLED 18:9 screen Resolution: 2280 x 1080 Rear cameras: 20 MP + 12 MP Front cameras: 25 MP Battery: 3,700 mAh
What Is Rumored:

1. It'll Be the First OnePlus with Carrier SupportThanks to a recent leak, we believe the desire of Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, might finally come to fruition. According to CNET, T-Mobile will be the exclusive US wireless carrier partner for the OnePlus 6T. This exclusivity is pending on the phone passing a certification process for the wireless carrier. If technical approval doesn't pass, the carrier launch may be delayed. With a wireless carrier, OnePlus could dramatically improve sales since most smartphones sales in America are conducted through wireless carriers. For context, 88 percent of all smartphones sales in the first quarter of 2018 were completed in physical retail stores, most of which were wireless carrier stores. They will also give OnePlus much-needed marketing, something the company has been hesitant to increase as it would hinder their ability to offer the phone at a low price. Image by T-Mobile/YouTube Overall, there will be two variants of the phone, one specific for T-Mobile which will be optimized for the carrier's network and the global version we've been getting for years. As for the T-Mobile version, it will include the new LTE Band 71, making it one of the better options for those in rural parts of America. AT&T customers will still be able to use OnePlus 6T using the global version which will have its bands.
2. It Might Work on VerizonAccording to PCMag, the upcoming OnePlus 6T will have LTE Band 13. With this band, it will have all the major LTE bands supported by Verizon Wireless. And with Verizon recently supporting LTE-only phones, there is a chance it works on the US's largest wireless carrier. The problem is that Verizon Wireless has a certification process which requires phones to be approved before they're allowed on the network. If not, any software update or network updates can cause the phone not to work on Verizon. Rumors indicate OnePlus could get this certification despite their partnership with T-Mobile, as T-Mobile would still be the only carrier to sell the phone.By having three of the largest wireless carriers supporting your phone (and one selling in-store), OnePlus can really improve their brand recognition in the US and better compete against the other big OEMs.
3. It'll Come with 'Warp Charge'We know that OnePlus will more than likely change the name of the charging system from "Dash Charge" to "Warp Charge." A trademark application was discovered in European Union Intellectual Property Office revealing the new name, which is the result of the Dash Charge trademark being rejected by the same office due to similarity to a product from wireless audio company Bragi, as well as a service from Amazon. Although its US trademark was approved, OnePlus will likely opt for uniformity and change the system name in all marks. However, there is a chance OnePlus uses this opportunity of the rebranding to introduce a new fast-charging system, this time based on Oppo's Super VOOC technology. The current OnePlus's system is based on Oppo's VOOC, so it is likely they may adopt the new fast-charging system.Super VOOC is a supercharged version of their current system. With Super VOOC, a 3,400 mAh battery can charge from zero to 100 percent in 35 minutes. That is about double the performance of the current system and any other fast charging system offered by other companies.
4. Android 9.0 Pie Will Be Baked Right InWith Android 9.0 Pie officially releasing to Pixels and Essential phones already, there is an excellent chance OnePlus 6T will launch with the new Android version. OnePlus could even be nearly complete with porting OxygenOS onto of the latest Android version since the OnePlus 6 was one of the eleven phones running the Android Pie Beta. Expect the typical enhancements to make their way including additional customization tools and improved battery management as well.Don't Miss: 44 Cool New Features & Changes in Android 9.0 Pie
5. There's a Small Price Increase & November LaunchThanks to CNET, we also learned the price and release date for the 6T. The OnePlus 6T will release about six months after the OnePlus 6 in November, which corresponds nicely with the previous T releases. The 6T's price will only increase by $20 to $550. The thing is, the with upgrades coming with this phone, I don't see how the price can only increase by $20. However, OnePlus could be anticipating additional sales from T-Mobile exclusivity, allowing them to keep the price low despite the rising cost to manufacture the new device.

6. Based on the Oppo R17Recently, OnePlus has been borrowing Oppo's design for their devices. With Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus all having the same parent company, BBK, this borrowing makes sense, and early rumors indicate that the OnePlus 6T will follow suit. Thanks to a recent Weibo post (see below), we got our first look at the packaging for the OnePlus 6T, which revealed the new design for the front cover of the phone. And it unveiled the recycling by OnePlus of an Oppo design, with this year's phone of choice being the R17. The Oppo R17. Image by TECH SPECS/YouTube

7. In-Display Fingerprint ScannerThe R17 doesn't have a physical fingerprint scanner, opting instead for an in-display fingerprint scanner. While we initially thought this technology was too new to carry over, it looks like OnePlus will bring it to the 6T. OnePlus is also once again utilizing a display notch. The 6T's notch is smaller than its predecessor, using a water drop design to reduce its size. Images via Weibo A leaked image from Weibo (see below) backs up this rumor as the complete view of the phone shows no visible fingerprint scanner. While it possible it could use a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, it appears to be that we are getting the in-display scanner.OnePlus confirmed this to CNET, stating the new feature will be called Screen Unlock. OnePlus also confirmed they had been eyeing the technology for a while, since the 5T, but only now feel it's mature enough for their standards. Due to its inclusion, the in-display fingerprint reader (which is technically embedded underneath the display) will increase the thickness by 0.012 inches.

8. It Will Have 2 or 3 Rear CamerasA leak arrives on Weibo showing us a complete first look at the OnePlus 6T. Based on the image, not only will the phone have the water drop notch in the front, but will have three rear cameras. The LED flash isn't seen in the image, but the assumption is that it is to the right of the camera (and therefore behind the image of the front side of the phone). The three cameras are arranged vertically along the center of the back cover. My only question about this photo is the lack of an alert slider. It is unlikely OnePlus would remove this beloved feature, but it doesn't appear to be on the phone in the photo. But if this is indeed true, it would make the OnePlus 6T one of only four phones with triple rear cameras (one of which isn't available in the US) and easily the cheapest phone. Image by GregglesTV/YouTube However, two recent leaks debunk the triple cameras. First, WinFuture released an image showing the new back cover of the device and its dual rear cameras. There is actually very little difference between the back cover of the OnePlus 6 and 6T, except for the rear fingerprint scanner's removal. Image by Roland Quandt/Twitter There's also a video that appears to be an official commercial for the OnePlus 6T. In the commercial, you can clearly see the man is holding a dual rear camera smartphone and not the rumored triple.
9. No Headphone JackOnePlus co-founder spoke with TechRadar and revealed that the OnePlus 6T would be the first OnePlus device not to include the headphone jack. Despite teasing companies like Apple and Motorola who removed it two years ago, OnePlus will follow suit. The reason is actually very similar to Apple, better battery life. With the removal the of the 3.5 mm port, it frees up space for additional battery capacity, giving OnePlus fans even longer battery life. Additionally, as new technology emerges, they can use that space for future-proofing. To compensate for this removal, there will be dongle for your 3.5 mm headphone jack until you make the switch to wireless.Additionally, they just released a pair of Bullets earbuds which use USB-C to pair with the OnePlus 6T for the low price of $19.95.
10. No Wireless Charging or IP RatingOnce again, OnePlus will be on the short list of OEMs that don't have at least one phone with an official IP Rating. In a CNET interview, CEO Peter Lau stated that, due to the additional cost, the 6T will not have an official IP certification. According to Mr. Lau,"The number of users that are taking their phone to go swimming are few and far between. To have everyone else pay, say, $30 more, for the sake of an IP rating in order to accommodate the one user who goes off and swims with their phone is unreasonable."
— CNETMr. Lau also doubles down on their reasoning for once again forgoing wireless charging. Unless wireless charging can match the speed of OnePlus's Dash Charging (or whatever they decide to call it), they will not include the technology. But for that to occur, the phone would be much thicker and conduct a lot of heat. Therefore, until the technology improves, OnePlus phones won't include it.

11. An Announcement on October 30Initial rumors indicated a launch event on Wednesday, October 17. The most substantial evidence was the lock screen released by OnePlus and used by CNET during their interview. However, it appears OnePlus was playing the old "ookey-doke" on us. OnePlus has officially announced that the launch event will take place on Pier 36 in New York City on October 30th. The event starts at 11 AM EDT.Like the 5T announcement, OnePlus will be selling tickets for the public to attend. Tickets start at $30, but for those who book before October 10th, they can take advantage of early bird pricing at $20. We guess that OnePlus will once again use the ticket revenue for a charitable donation (with the 5T, OnePlus donated to F-Droid).OnePlus is also giving out free goodies for all those who attended. Every ticket gets you a OnePlus Pin-set, a sketchbook, and Bullets Wireless earbuds ($69) for free. There will be brand new OnePlus gear at the event, snacks, and much more. And for those who can't make it to the event, OnePlus will also live stream the event.Date: Tuesday, October 30thPlace: Pier 36 NYC @ 299 South Street, New York, NY 10002Time: 11:00 AM EDT (Check-in time begins at 9 AM)Buy Tickets for the OnePlus 6T Launch Event in NYC Image via OnePLus
What We're Hoping For:
12. A QuadHD DisplayWhile we agree that the inclusion of an AMOLED display was a great addition to the OnePlus lineups, their refusal to add a screen with a higher resolution than 1080p is annoying. From its inception with the OnePlus One, every OnePlus device has had a 1080p display and, each year, their reasoning weakens. While we understand the omission in the previous generation due to the cost, it becomes harder to accept now with economies of scale dictating the price should be much lower now. While 1080p is fine, 1440p is better. The additional pixels makes video consumption better and makes images look crisper on your display. And with the expectation of the OnePlus 6T to include another large (over 6-inch) display, the additional pixels is needed to keep the PPI at a high enough level.
13. A Better DAC & Some Stereo SpeakersWhile this feature is technically wishful thinking since OnePlus has not made any strides in this department, it is very much a possible inclusion thanks to the rooting community. Currently, there is a Magisk module available which turns the earpiece of the OnePlus 6 into a speaker, creating stereo speakers. Therefore, it is possible OnePlus could implement something similar to improve the quality of the speaker which, while loud, is lacking clarity thanks to its inability to separate the sound.Along the same lines, we really hope they enhance the headphone jack with a proper DAC. While OnePlus' inclusion of a headphone jack is commendable, the port inability to drive any decent pair of headphones is annoying. With only LG in the US offering a formidable DAC on their phones, this could become a smartphone of choice for audiophiles looking for great sound paired with a great operating system and skin.

14. Sandstone Glass BackOne of the new features of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is the ability to add texture to the glass. Instead of feeling like glass, OEMs can now make the glass feel rougher and less slippery. This would be an excellent opportunity to bring back the Sandstone back, famously introduce in the OnePlus One. While keeping the glass back (which has signal improvement and the potential for wireless charging), OnePlus could add the rougher texture of Sandstone, making it easier for users to hold the phone.Don't Miss: Gorilla Glass 6 Fixes the Worst Part of Glass Phones Additionally, they would also use Corning Vibrant Gorilla Glass to use high-resolution photos to alter the look of the phone. For example, they could make the phone's back color look like Sandstone. Many OnePlus fans love this look and would allow them to enjoy the make the most of new glass while meeting the wants of their customers. Image by Agent Vinay/YouTube
We're Keeping Our Eyes on All the RumorsThe OnePlus 6T could be a huge upgrade for OnePlus. Since OnePlus is a company of the people, it is only right that they eventually add these features, and there is no better time than with the 6T. We'll keep you updated as we find out more. With official T-Mobile carrier support, OnePlus 6T should enter the hands of millions of new US customers. How many customers largely depend on what changes they make. While it still early, we know quite a lot about the upcoming phone and the possible specs and hardware would make this a worthy upgrade. However, it's with the wishful-thinking features that OnePlus could really make an impact in America and improve the deteriorating relationship between Chinese companies and the US.Don't Miss: 100+ Secret Dialer Codes for OnePlus PhonesFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Unlock Android 9.0 Pie's New 'Feature Flags' Menu to Modify System Settings

How To: Unlock Android 9.0 Pie's New 'Feature Flags' Menu to Modify System Settings
There's a new secret settings menu hiding in Android 9.0 Pie that offers Chrome-style "flags" to the overall operating system. Since it's currently the first Developer Preview and Public Beta versions, it's possible that this menu could disappear entirely when the stable version finally gets released, but it could also persist in its current hidden state where you have to unlock it.With this new flags menu unlocked, you can tweak a few settings design choices in Android Pie back to their equivalent Android Oreo versions, including the menus for the battery, connected devices, and time zones selections. You can also test out a few new UI choices such as a redesigned "About phone" section.Don't Miss: Volume Buttons in Android P Control Media by Default Now
Step 1: Enable Developer OptionsIn order to see the new secret "Feature flags" menu, you'll need to enable "Developer options." This process is slightly different than on previous Android versions because of Android Pie's new interface, but it's pretty much the same overall. If you need help, check out the guide below for directions.More Info: How to Unlock Developer Options on Your Pixel in Android P

Step 2: Find the Feature FlagsWith the "Developer options" now available to you, head back to the "System" menu, select "Developer options," then tap on "Feature flags" under the Debugging section to see all of the system-wide flags you can toggle on or off. In the Developer Preview, there were eight flags, while the Public Beta dropped it to just six, and toggling them on makes them true and off makes false.

Step 3: Have Fun Checking Out What HappensNow that you have access to this menu, you're probably wondering what each of these items does. Well, here's a quick list including the differences between on/off.settings_about_phone_v2: With it "false," it will look like normal. Making it "true" will move the "About phone" option to the top of the "System" menu, and when you tap on it, will show "My Phone" up top, with your name right below. There's a lot more listed here, and even the "Advanced" section stuffs more in. False (left) vs. true (right). settings_bluetooth_while_driving: With it "false," nothing about driving will show up in "Connection preferences" in the "Connected devices" settings. Making it "true" will add a "Use Bluetooth when driving" toggle that's, by default, turned off. Turning it on will automatically enable Bluetooth while driving. False (left) vs. true (right). settings_connected_device_v2: This flag has disappeared in subsequent betas, but in case you're running an older one ... With it "true," you'll see a simpler "Connected devices" settings menu. Making it "false" will make it look like it did in Android Oreo, where all the "Connection preferences" seen above are immediately available. Tapping on "Bluetooth" is the same as "Add device" seen below. True (left) vs. false (right). settings_data_usage_v2: Unknown. Whether it's set to "false" or "true," there seems to be no visible change to any of the menus in Android Pie. We'll update this once we get more info. device_info_v2: This flag has disappeared in subsequent betas, but in case you're running an older one ... Unknown. Whether it's set to "true" or "false," there seems to be no visible change to any of the menus in Android Pie. We'll update this once we get more info. settings_audio_switcher: Unknown. Whether it's set to "false" or "true," there seems to be no visible change to any of the menus in Android Pie. We'll update this once we get more info. settings_zone_picker_v2: With it "true," when you go to "Date & time" in the "System" settings menu and toggle off "Automatic time zone," when tap "Select time zone" you'll be presented with a more detailed view. Making it "false" will return it back to its Oreo equivalent, where it's simple and less cluttered. True (left) vs. false (right). settings__battery__v2: This flag has disappeared in subsequent betas, but in case you're running an older one ... With it "true," you'll have less information in the "Battery" settings as before in Oreo. Move it to "false," and you get everything back how it was in Oreo, including access to advanced stats and individual app usage. True (left) vs. false (right). settings_battery_display_app_list: With it "false," the "Battery" settings view will look just like above whether or not you have the settings_battery_v2 set to true or false. However, if you set this option to "true," you'll get a list of system resources in the "Battery settings," but only if settings_battery_v2 is set to true. False (left) vs. true (right). Like I mentioned before, this menu could disappear when the public release of Android P hits Pixels and other smartphones. A lot of these options they are probably testing out and waiting to get feedback on which is best to include in the final release, but that doesn't mean 100% that this hidden menu will disappear and we'll be stuck with whatever they chose for us. Only time will tell.Don't Miss: All the Cool New Features & Changes in Android 9.0 PieFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Use Yelp Collections to Find New Places & Keep Your Bookmarked Locations More Organized

In the past, if you stumbled upon a Yelp listing you liked, you could bookmark it and check it out later on your profile. You can still take advantage of this feature in the mobile apps, but it's more refined now than it ever was thanks to Collections, a feature Yelp first added back in May 2018. You get more power over organizing, accessing, sharing, and discovering favorite businesses. If you've got a ton of bookmarked restaurants, bars, cafes, parks, boutiques, shopping centers, and whatever, you need to take advantage of the Collections feature to keep tabs on where you've been and where you want to go. You can even share a specific Collection you've made as a whole to someone else instead of sharing business by business.Don't Miss: How to View & Leave Tips on Yelp (& Why It's Important) These folder-like groups are also great because they serve up new, weekly personalized recommendations based off of your Yelp activity, and they also include Yelp-curated ones, all of which are also shareable. Collections are available in both the iOS and Android app versions of Yelp.

Step 1: Access & Follow CollectionsBefore we step into creating or sharing Collections, we're going to show you where they are. Open Yelp, and tap on "Collections" in the navigation bar at the bottom. Here, you can view shifting Collections featured in your city (or any city you want), your personal Collections and all your bookmarks, and Collections you follow (which is where the places recommended for you based on your activity will be). To follow a Collection, open it up, then tap on "Follow Collection." All Collections you follow will appear under the My Collections section on the page. The reason you should follow certain Collections is because they change every so often, so if you find one you really like, save it so that you have easy access to it.

Step 2: Create Your Own CollectionInstead of simply bookmarking your favorite businesses, you can save them into a Collection of your choice, such as "Mexican Restaurants" or "Best Dive Bars in L.A." To create a Collection, either tap "Create" in the top right or tap on the "Create" (Android) or "Create New" (iOS) empty box under My Collections.Alternatively, you can create a new Collection when saving a new bookmark on a business listing. On the listing page, tap the bookmark icon, then select "New Collection." You can also tap the vertical or horizontal ellipsis (̢̢̢ۢۢۢ), aka the "More Options" button, in the top right, then select "Bookmark" (Android) or "Save Business" (iOS) to get to the "New Collection" option.Enter your Collection name, then decide whether you want it to be public or private. Only a public Collection can be featured on Yelp and viewed by others, whereas a private one is just for you. Hit "Create" (Android) or "Save" (iOS), then tap on your new Collection under the My Collections heading to view it. When viewing the collection, you get the opportunity to add a description to it.

Step 3: Add to Your Personal CollectionsNow that your Collection has been created, it's time to add to it. Do this by going to a business listing and tapping on the bookmark icon. You can also tap the vertical or horizontal ellipsis (̢̢̢ۢۢۢ), aka the "More Options" button, in the top right, then select "Bookmark" (Android) or "Save Business" (iOS).You'll have the option to save the listing to "My Bookmarks," which is filled with every business you've ever bookmarked before knowing about Collections, or to any Collection you've created. Again, you can also create a new Collection from this menu. Putting a business in a custom Collection will not automatically add it to "My Bookmarks," so you'll have to do that manually if you want to keep that updated.

Step 4: Organize Each Collection BetterAfter you've added a few listings to your personal Collection, whenever you need it next, you'll find it right there in the "Collections" tab. When viewing a Collection, you can organize its contents by date added, by distance, or alphabetically. You can also leave notes underneath each listing: just tap on the space that says "Write a note," enter your note, and hit "Save."

Step 5: View a Map & Edit a Collection's DetailsIf you tap on the map icon on the top right, you can view a map of your listings. To edit a Collection on an iPhone, tap the cog in the top right, which gives you access to change the name, to make it public or private, or to delete it. On Android, just tap the name on the Collection to edit that. For the other settings, tap the vertical ellipsis in the top right, then choose either "Privacy Settings" or "Remove Collection."

Step 6: Share a Collection with FriendsYou can use the share icon in the top right (on iOS) or the big blue "Share" button underneath the Collection name (on Android) to share your Collection via text message, social media, or whatever. You can also copy a link to the Collection and share it that way. The iOS sharing options (left) vs. Android (right).
